Discarding Race Cards

So we've been playing Munchkin Bites! and love the game. It gets heated at times, but we enjoy the competitiveness this game allows for. We had a situation tonight where someone (werewolf race) was going to beat a monster and win the game but during combat a rival played the Holy Water Trap card resulting in non-humans losing a level. Since the player in battle was level 9 and about to win this obviously would postpone the game by pushing him back to level 8 and then up to nine again after beating said monster. My question is could the level 9 player have won by simply removing his race? The rule book says "You can discard a race card at any". So could he have just said "I don't want to be a werewolf, discard his race card and be a human, safe from the holy water? Thanks for any thoughts in advanced!

I'm new - so only a guess - but no, the player cannot remove his race to avoid the Trap. Once a trap (/curse) is played on a player, that player must immediately satisfy the terms of that trap before anything else happens. Thus, he would lose the level before he could discard his race.

Exactly what Unclebob said.

UncleBob's guess is correct. Munchkin and its kin do not have what is commonly known as a stack mechanism. The general rule is that events happen when they happen, and can't be canceled or ignored by playing any old card. The only way to cancel cards or events are with cards that say they can do just that. If you want to avoid a Trap, you'll need to play a Wishing Ring, and in Munchkin Bites!, I'm not sure there is anything else you could play.

Are those "times" from the time you roll to see who goes first until someone hits level 10? And then for a few hours after that? :)
