Discard class from hand?

Classes can be discarded at any time: does that include from your hand? (You'd do it to avoid charity I suppose.)

Class cards don't become Classes until they are in play, so no. You need to play them and then discard them, or discard them to power an ability, such as Theft.

Right. Same rule applies for looting a body. You can take a class from some one's hand in the event of their death. (But no other time, except during a cult meeting)

Yes. You can discard Races and Classes at any time, even in combat or other player's turns. You can only play a replacement card if it is your turn, though.

So, as I understand it (and we have been playing it), the only real effect is that if you have a class (or race) card in play, you can't discard one from your hand. If there are none in play, you can discard to your heart's content. This is akin to playing and discarding right away. Also, if you have 2 matching cards (like 2 Warriors), you could play one and discard the other. Basically, you are playing the first, discarding the first, and playing the second.

This wording seems to be the clearest for my friends, and seems to resolve any issues. I just wanted to clarify that these rulings are correct.

Yep. All that was correct. Also note that if you do discard a Race and play the same Race immediately, you don't lose Items nor cards you could potentially lose otherwise if you were to take the actions separately. Examples are if you are a Dwarf with multiple Big Items, a Centaur with multiple Steeds or any single Race with Half-Breed in play as well.

Edit: I might make one more note that if you have no Race cards, you can't just discard the Race cards directly, you do need to play then discard them as two separate actions. This is important if you are using Epic Junior played on your Human status. It states it is lost if you play a Race card and you can't discard the Race directly from your hand to avoid that.

As long as it is your turn, you can play then discard as many Races or Classes as you have in your hand.
