A little help please.

Hi... kind of a stupid question but, my main group of friends predominately plays MTG (Magic The Gathering) and thus they treat Munchkins with the same mind set as mtg. Every one treats the one-shot cards like instants and counters and I'm not sure we're using them correctly.

So my question is: If I've already defeated a monster (whether from the combination of bonuses and level or via potions and outside cards) is it possible for another player to remove the monster (with use of say... a friendship potion card), or to redirect the monster with use of a Transferral Potion card?

Or does the combat phase count as resolved at the moment of defeat?

Probably not, if you're bringing MTG rules to the Munchkin table. In Munchkin, cards are resolved as they are played -- there's no way* to go back and negate a card that's already taken effect.

You are required to give a reasonable amount of time after you declare victory over a monster for other players to foil that victory. However, once you give that reasonable time and no one does anything, then you have defeated the monster and they cannot go back and say, "Wait, I'm playing this, ha ha!" They had their chance.

* OK, technically, I should say very few ways, and only in specific circumstances. A Wishing Ring, for instance, can prevent a Curse from taking effect. Look for the key term "cancel" on the card.

It may be helpful to pay particular attention to the difference between resolving a card and resolving combat.

A card's effects must be resolved immediately before any other card may be played (unless the other card specifically says it can, yada yada, and so on). Combat, however, very intentionally gives other players the opportunity to interfere with the combat prior to resolution.

I'm a MTG player as well but it seems that the "Stack" (last played card onto the stack is the first to be resolved) doesn't seem to apply to munchkin.

other then wishing ring and a few others you can't play a card the same way as in magic.

HOWEVER having enough levels to defeat a monster is not enough to end combat, you still have to give people a chance (2.6 seconds?) to buff the monster up more or remove the monster altogether like through a friendship potion. Combat is over if no-one can or wants to do anything or too much time as elapsed.

If I were to try to create a list of times where I've explained how Munchkin does not use a stack mechanism in just the last 12 months, I'd have a really long list. . .

But, here is the last explanation that I posted.
