[DF] Bow fencers with Swashbuckler lens

Greetings, buddies!

DF 11 introduces new power-ups. One of these bad ass power-ups is the Scout's "Bow Fencer".

Ok. So once a Scout has it, he can attack and parry with his bow just like it was a melee weapon, right? Ok, now what if he gets the Swashbuckler (or Knight) lens, that gives +8 points to spend in a melee skill? Can he spend these 8 poins to raise his Bow skill, since now that is his main melee skill? Or he can't, since after all, Bow is a ranged skill?

What about Enhanced Parry 3 (Bow)?

Id say no.
It's still a ranged weapon skill. His just lucky he may use it to hit in melee.

Yes. It's a ranged weapon skill. But with Bow Fencer power-up (DF 11, p. 32), it's not just a ranged weapon skill, but also a melee skill capabble of melee attacks and full parries just like a sword.

I send this PM to Kromm...

...and He said:

"That seems fine to me, sure."

Enhanced Parry 3, Weapon Master (Bow) and acrobatic seems to be all about bow fencing.

Now, I have another question: A bow used as a melee weapon is used with one-handed or two-handed (or both)? Just in the case of two hands use, would it benefit the MA rule about two-handed weapon parries?

What do you think about this Bladed Bow? What stats in GURPS rules?

I wrote it up on my wiki :)

There was a whole thread about it here.

The rules in The Deadly Spring for non-working portions of bows would handle this one pretty well, actually.

You'd build this as (say) a six-foot bow, with 2-3 feet of non-working limb in the middle. The bladed part would not deflect, and thus would not detract too much from efficiency, though balance might be wonky, and a -1 Acc and/or increased min ST just due to the extra weight of the blades might be in order.

The best way to use the weapon as a "real" melee device would likely be to CUT the bowstring, which would get the limbs of the bow out of the way, and turn it into something resembling a real bladed staff.

I cannot believe I'm typing this. Still, is all this really is is a take-down bow with projecting bits off of the riser.

Definitely. Swashbuckler and Scout are - in their combat capabilities - specialists in one weapon. You could make the argument that combining the two weapons in this manner is more appropriate than any other way.

I didn't have The Deadly Spring at the time, but it's interesting that I generally eyeballed it at roughly the same results you did. I increased Bulk as well because I figure having weird projecty melee bits can't help the situation.

Of course, the picture I was working off had the blades at the ends of the bowstave - not off the middle - so the weapon I was modeling in my head was sort of "the worlds worst batleth" or "a spear that's sharp on both ends" rather than "a fencing weapon".

I gave a -1 to skill to use it as a staff/spear due to being really kind of wrong. But that can be bought off with a perk.

What can't be bought off is the further -1 for using it while strung. If the string is cut (on a parry against a bladed weapon, or deliberately) or if it's just plain unstrung, you get rid of the -1 :)

There's also a -1 to skill to use it as a bow, beyond the general ACC penalties. There's a perk to buy that off, too.

Sometimes it's fun to do something ridiculous. Same, sometimes it's fun to play a character doing something ridiculous, like fighting with a bladed bow like it's a batleth or a smallsword :)

I'll have to go pull out my spreadsheet and play with that idea now :)

Just to remember, guys, this is a fantasy weapon.

Swing+1 cutting?

I don't know. The blades in the Bladed Blow doesn't look long enough for swing+1. The Bladed Bow in D&D does the same damage as a Shortsword (1d6), so I think Swing cutting damage is more apropriate.

It's not about blade length so much as lever arm. I specifically based it on the Qian Kun Ri Yue Dao (the chinese weapon that the batleth is based on) as I mentioned above, because the picture I was shown had the blades on the ends of the bowstave, not off the middle. Damage is identical to the Qian Kun Ri Yue Dao.

As mentioned, this was written before Bow Fencer ever existed, and using a different reference picture.

EDIT: By the by, I HATE THE NEW GOOGLE SEARCH. I can't search for "Bow-sword" or "bowsword". It keeps matching "Bow, sword" and "Bow/sword" and I'm going to set their engineers on FIRE. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaa.
