It's also already claimed and owned.

The above actually applies to most colonial activity to some degree, the settlement of New England, for ex, by religious expatriates was an unreasonable expenditure of money, effort, and risk...except that they didn't think so by their standards.

Wasn't it also the case that they had originally planned to land in the Virginia area, but the captain of the ship was paid off to land somewhere else? Or is that simply rumors that I read?

You are, in fact, correct about the Mayflower. It was supposed to land in Virginia Colony (at a point further north than modern day Virginia, by the way), but it went off-course. This only accounts for the Pilgrims, however. These were the settlers at Plymouth, not the Puritans at Mass. Bay.

We are all talking about Traveller, so realism isn't that necessary. Ballpark figure is better than some aspects of the game canon, after all.

I'm not sure what you mean. Are you talking about rules or setting? Which rules? Which setting? What is 'canon'?

There are as many approaches to 'Traveller' as there are Traveller GMs, I would imagine. Some people prefer to lean towards 'hard SF' and others lean towards 'space opera.'

Then you aren't really talking Traveller, but Space campaigns.

I've done my share of criticizing Traveller canon, but my preferred solutions involve fixing it, not ignoring it.

I'm quite sure I know what I'm talking about, Flyn.

Traveller is several things:

It's a game system by GDW, called Traveller.

It is also the several spin offs and later versions of that system. This includes Megatraveller, T4, and Mongoose Traveller.

It is the 'Traveller Universe' of Marc Miller and associated authors.

It is all the many settings created or adapted by Traveller GMs, whether those settings use some version of the 'official Traveller universe' or not.

It is GURPS Traveller, which uses an alternate history take on the OTU. To the real OTU purists, GURPS Traveller is not canon! :)

To the discerning OTU purist, however, any GT reference to the time before the Change Point is canon for the OTU too. The two universes are supposedly identical up to the CP.

It's retro-sci-fi. Fixing it would make it a different genre.

Hehehe, who said most purists are discerning? Ah, and what exactly IS the 'Change Point'?
