Defenses against bullets?

This is our first "High Tech" campaign and I am completely unfamiliar with the rules. I need some references to some books and page numbers to read up on defending against bullets (if any).
Thanks.

Not sure what you mean, precisely. You can dodged bullets or wear armor with DR. If supernatural or exotic options are available, you also things like insubstantiality and injury tolerance: diffuse.

Defenses:

Avoid situations in which people are trying to shoot you.

Cover and concealement! Get behind something that will stop bullets, or at least hide you from the shooter.

Shoot the other guy before he shoots you.

There's a general listing of combat modifiers in the back of Campaigns.

Posture. Crouching, kneeling and lying down helps a bit.
Cover. Light cover gives -2 to hit, being concealed behind things can give larger penalties.
Body Armor. Even a few DR can turn a serious injury into a less serious injury.

Darkness penalties also help.

Re: Defenses against bullets?

The main mundane defenses are as follows:
Dodge: As long as the defender can see the shooter, he can "dodge" bullets, i.e., take evasive action in anticipation of the shot.

Armor: Wearing bullet proof vests and the like protects the defender by reducing the bullets' damage. Depending on whether you're using hit locations, this can be hard to beat or easy to beat.

Cover: By taking cover, you can keep from getting hit. A high Move stat can help a character move from cover to cover in this situation.

If you have the Enhanced Time Sense advantage, you can use the Parry Missile Weapons skill at -5 to parry bullets.

You can Dodge bullets, but you can't Retreat against them. If the defender is standing, it is possible to Dodge and Drop for a +3 bonus, but once the the defender is prone, there's no further opportunity for bonuses.

Re: Defenses against bullets?

I think there was a famous British government instructional film that covered the best defense (not to be seen). B364 covers the Change Posture maneuver you can use to stand up -- or not.

The only Active Defense you can roll is Dodge (B374). (The idea isn't that you see the bullet coming and you leap out of the way. The idea is that if you're in combat, you're trying to move in such a way as to make it difficult to hit you, particularly when you see metal tubes pointed in your general direction.) Dodge and Drop and Diving For Cover (both B377) options will likely come up.

If you have speedster advantages like Enhanced Time Sense, then the Parry Missile Weapons skill gives you a chance to parry bullets. A shield can act as Cover (B407), but you can't Block bullets with it. It just gives you cover DR if it gets hit first.

Thanks.

In addition to said above, read p.17 Tactical Dodge in Tactical Shooting.
