elf effect winning the game

Hi,
One of the elf's abilities is to gain level when assisting another player.

Can an elf win the game (going up to level 10) using his special ability?
Does this counts as "going up a level by killing a monster"?

Yes, to both questions.

Not to second guess you Andrew, But Im SURE The rules state the only way to win the 10th level is by winning a monster battle Only.

Cancel That, I found the Rule....I dont know why I thought it cannot:

http://www.worldofmunchkin.com/faq/

Important Note #1: Reaching Level 10

The general rule is that you may not reach Level 10 except by killing a monster. If you are at Level 9 and something else happens that would normally let you go up a level . . . you don't. You stay at Level 9. If you have a card or an ability that lets you mess with another player and get a level in return, you cannot play that card or use that ability.

BUT . . . certain cards specifically overrule this. If the card explicitly says that it can end the game, or that the level it grants can be the winning level, then obviously it can be. The corollary is that if the card does not say it can be the winning level, then it cannot be.

Note also that ANY level gained as a result of killing a monster counts as the winning level. If you have a Race or Class ability that lets you get an extra level after winning certain combats, that level can be the winning level. A Go Up a Level card played after combat, however, cannot be, because the card does not itself kill the monster.

Of course, this answer applies to Levels 19 and 20, not to Level 10, during Epic Munchkin games.

To be honest, it's been that way since the game was released (or at least shortly after): An Elf helper can get the winning Level. Interestingly enough, this was the first question I ever ran by SJ in an e-mail, back in September of 2001. What can I say?: Elves are jerks, through and through.

Hey, let's be fair now.

Orcs are jerks too.

What if a power or some other card or combination of cards forces an elf to help without reward. Could that treat the levels as a reward and override the elf's racial ability?
Just off the top of my head, lets say a group are playing Fantasy and Bites. One person is a Werewolf, another is a Half-Breed Werewolf/Elf. The Werewolf has the Packmates power, which forces another werewolf to help without reward, and is in combat with a monster he can not beat without help. Using his power, he asked the Werewolf/Elf to help. Will the Werewolf/Elf get the level for helping?

Yes, the level that the Elf gains is not a "reward" from combat, but a power that the race provides the player.

Hello All, as an adenda to this, does an Orc / Elf Super Munchkin get 2 levels for helping AND winning by 10? If so could they go from 8 - 10 all outside of their turn?

Ta.

The Orc has to be fighting alone to get his 'win by more than 10' level, so no.

Hello Clipper, good point. I forgot it was only alone. If an orc is alone they can win with the extra level becaues it counts as killing a monster? Just bought Unnatural Axe and am double checking.

Yes, that's correct.

Yes. In fact, Steve Jackson and I watched the first Munchkin world champion win that way, much to the shock of all but two players (one being the aforementioned winner, the other being the player who tried, and tried and tried to convince the other players to at least do a little something to hinder him or help the Monsters to reduce that gap, even if they couldn't stop him outright, but couldn't seem to explain why it was so important).

I want to win with this combo almost as bad as I want to win with a Dark card. Sadly about 99% of Munchkin players won't let any Elf help them in a combat, let alone a Level 8 one. :( Playing an Elf is hard!

Another reason to always hold those cards that end combat instantly very close to your chest. One of my more recent games saw one player denied victory by Deus Ex Machinegun twice in a row (because the cleric decided to use Resurrection to bring that handy little card back into play).
