cleric face up discard rule

Clarification needed:

when a cleric draws his door card as a face up knock can he:

1. Discard any number of cards instead and take that number of cards from the top of the discard pile and put those into his hand.

2. Or does it mean that he can discard one card and play the top door on the discard pile as his knock.

Re: cleric face up discard rule

The Cleric can discard as many cards to take face-up cards from the discards as he would normally draw. When kicking down the door, this is one card only, unless you are playing Epic rules.

Re: cleric face up discard rule

Is that card then in play as his knock down of the door? Or does he get to put it into his hand and not have it played on him?

A card that is being resurrected replaces the card that would have been drawn. If you're kicking down the door and use resurrection, then that card replaces the card you would have drawn. Therefore, if it's a curse, it affects you, a Monster you have to fight it, and so on.

For clarity, a Cleric could not use this ability if he defeated a monster alone and drew face-down cards, but could use the ability if he had help because they are drawn face-up?

Seems a bit odd if so.

That is correct.

That's the way the rule's been since Steve first wrote the game.

Huh. I'll have let those I play with know about this.

We've played extensively (50+ games) and only about a week ago noticed that we had been reading the Cleric card wrong. We had be using it for face-down cards only! It had seemed to all of us the more logical way to use it.

But, hey, house rules and all that I suppose. We do try to play by the book as much as possible, however.

I don't know why the rule is what it is, but it seems like play balance to me.

When playing against a cleric, it is relatively easy to discard a door card to bury a door card you don't want the cleric to resurrect. The top door discards change quickly, so a cleric generally decides to resurrect at the start of his turn.

It is much harder to discard a treasure card to bury the top treasure if you don't want the cleric to resurrect that (both more difficult to discard a treasure and more costly). Since the top card of the treasure discards changes less frequently, a cleric can plan a resurrect farther in advance if he likes what is on top.

So, since it is harder to prevent a cleric from resurrecting a treasure, it is equally harder for the cleric to resurrect a treasure, requiring him to have a helper.

Put another way, if a cleric could resurrect on a face-down treasure draw, he could continually recycle powerful one-shots to win combats. Any cleric with pollymorph potion, magic lamp, transferal potion, etc., could use these in every combat, because he could make sure he got them back at the end of the combat during the treasure draw.
