Power Build to Double an Attribute...

... or, for that matter, increase / decrease it by a multiple. How would you do this? Let's say that point cost was no object.

The way the power would work would be as an Affliction. It would work to double a specified attribute (let's say ST) on whomever it was used. If it was used on someone with ST 10, that person would have ST 20 for the duration. If it was used on someone with ST 21, the person would have ST 42. Always the result would be existing ST x2.

Is this possible to build, as a generic power that would work to double anyone's ST, regardless of how low or high it was? Obviously the benefit the advantage would confer would increase with the target's ST.

I assume (if it even is possible) that a similar power build could produce an ability that could reduce an attribute by half. Or to build a gadget that could do this regardless of who was wielding it.

It seems appropriate to set maximum attribute bonus and then give Variable+5% plus Accessibility (only doubles actual attribute) (seems near -30%).

Re: Power Build to Double an Attribute...

Sorry, GURPS removed the old doubling (or halving) of attributes*. This is mostly for point balancing, after all an ability that double the ST for someone with ST 10 is providing a significant less return than one that doubles ST 20 (or ST 50, ST 100, etc).

* The Super Effort modifier (from Powers and Supers) does multiply the effectiveness of the attribute, but it has a proportional, not fixed, cost.

I guess its because of the same reasons there is no "immunity to damage" or "fireimmunity". Just do it like Walrus has suggested - take the maximum ST you'll ever encounter and take the appropriate mods - you can still call it "double all ST" but at some point the char just discovers that even his power has limits. (happens to unbeatable attacks and the like in movies, too, btw)

GURPS doesn't do this. (One of its' major failings to my mind.)

IF you are the GM, then you can set an arbitrary value as infinite and use that value's price as the basis for the ability.

IF you are not the GM, then you can negotiate with your GM about setting an arbitrary value as infinite and then go forward from there.

(Example: I, as the GM, state that Super Strength 25 is effectively infinite for these purposes, and price the +advantage value as if Infinite was worth 675 points. Or whatever.)

Its possible to build any effect you want as a power; attribute doublings (like absolutes) don't exist as existing abilities because its impossible to price them fairly generically. For specific campaigns and applications, though, go for it.

I'd price as if it were an Affliction (Advantage) with the advantage point cost being the cost to add enoung ST to double (or whatever the desired effect was) the ST of the maximum normally-encountered -- and yeah, this is a judgement call -- ST for the valid targets (if it was limited to "humans only", I'd use ST 20, so the value would be based on ST +20 for doubling); the benefit of acting as a multiplier (for the rare higher STs than the base used for calculation) is offset by the limitation of acting as a multiplier (when applied to the more common lower STs than the base used.)

By the way, you also can make en extra-effort with your ability to double the attribute of the more gifted person than you have expected to meet.
