BIG item turned sideway considered carried?

"An item in your hand does not count until you play it; at that point, it is carried."

"You should indicate items that can't help you, or extras not being worn, by turning the cards sideways."

Ok, so I lost a race/class which negated my current BIG item, I turned that BIG item sideways.

I put into play another race/class that can use a different BIG item that I also have in my hand.

So, thus, I can carry 2 BIG items BUT only one is actively in play?

No. You may only have one Big item on the table, period, unless you have a card such as Dwarf that allows you to have more than one.

So how can you get rid of the big item that you don't want/can't use any more?

I understand you can sell it, but what if it's early in the game and you don't have anything else to sell with it?

My situation dealt with the Jollyboat from Booty. It was dealt to me at the opening and I put it down. A few hands later, I got a better ship that didn't have the BIG item stipulation and wanted to get rid of it. My wife took pity on me and used a curse that got rid of a big item.

That's the conundrum of BIG items...if you play them, you only get one in play, and if you later pull another, you have to sell or curse yourself to get rid of the one that's in play in order to play the other.

Or you hope you draw a Dwarf race card or some other card that lets you carry an additional BIG item.

That's part of the problem with the Jollyboat. It specifically states that you may not have ANY other big items, no matter what.

Huh...haven't played Booty yet...that's a harsh card, then. Guess you have no choice but to sell it or curse yourself (or convince someone else to curse you) at that point, if you want to play another BIG card.

You could also trade it, couldn't you? Let me know if it's not ok. If it is really that early in the game you could pawn in off for some small bonus item. The other person would think they are getting some awesome deal until they draw a better big item.

Absolutely you can trade, since it's an Item. You can trade at any time during the game, as long as you and your trading partner are not in combat at the time. Traded Items, however, must be in play to begin with and must stay in play afterward.

You could also use a cheat... Right?

Yes, of course.

Directed at all posters: as a general rule in discussions like this one, we're going to be talking about the standard rules and not call out every common exception. In this case, both Cheat! cards and the Dwarf race will let you use extra Big items, and so will some Hirelings and some Item Enhancers. There's no point in going over the whole list of exceptions, however, until the person asking the question is clear on the actual rule.

It's kind of like asking if a restaurant has Coke and being told all the things they DON'T have. It's potentially useful information, but it doesn't help clarify the question that was actually asked.
