Ads, Seriously?

We don't have animated profile pics, because they're annoying.

We don't have pics in sigs, because they're annoying.

But now we have ads in the forums, including animated ones. What? Annoying.

I don't want to turn off images in the forums, because the missing spots are also annoying. I also like seeing the avatars. But the new ads are reaaally annoying me, already.

On my laptop, I already dislike coming to the forums because I lose so much space to the GIANT Steve Jackson Games nav bar at the top. The new ad means I lose a liiiitttle bit more space off the top. May not seem like much to you, but annoying to me.

If you're gonna pollute the place with ads, could we please have the smaller nav bar used in various other places on SJGames, and put the ad outside of the forum block?

(By the way, I think the integration of the ads into the forums is nicely done. Good job there. I just find it rather distracting having that brightly colored, blinking/moving thing constantly drawing my eyes upward.)

Thanks,

Armin

Animated Ads

Please don't do that.

I don't see how you're losing much space due to the ads - they're in a place that was previously blank and unused, and thus they take up no extra space.

The animations on the advertisements are distracting, though, I'll agree with that.

It may depend on your screen geometry and resolution, but on the machine I'm currently using, the bar containing the ads is now significantly thicker than it was without ads.

If you're running Firefox with Ad-Block-Plus just right click on the image and block it.

I can tolerate ads as such, but the blinking is a bit, well, intrusive.

Personally, I'm going to get an adblocker. Currently, I rely on NoScripts for Chrome to nuke adds, but I don't want to blacklist the whole sjgames domain, and unlike many adds, they reside in the same domain as the site.

Personally, if my vote counts for anything, then let me cast it against the blinking, animated, adds.

True.

I right-clicked and blocked that ads (a blue/white one) as an automatic reflex, before realizing it was on SJG forums.

The ads are actually well done, and well placed in my opinion, but they are strongly disruptive and therefore will get blocked.

Same size, same place, no (or very slow) animation, more 'toned-down' colours, and they would be ok for me.

The warehouse 23 ads (wh23.jpg) or e23 (135.gif) for example are not a problem.
xmas link : borderline. Drop the red blinking, and it would be ok.
Chez cthulhu : distract me with constant moving : blocked
Ninja-burger.gif : big white flash : NO.
Chibictulhu : cute, exept for the the flashing text.
mini-chibi : The beginning is ok, the end, no. A much longer delay between sentences would help.
nanuk : same as ninja burger : the big white flash is -painful-.

This, of course, is only according to my personal taste.
But as long as ads like nanuk or ninja-burger are on the list, all ads will be blocked by me.

I don't really get advertising, and really never have, but I don't really see how advertising here is going to really do anything. If you are on the forums then presumably you already know what SJGames makes. At any rate I find them mildly annoying.

I imagine they're counting on that not being the case. There are probably any number of Munchkin players who are only vaguely aware of, say, Zombie Dice, Revolution, and...well, GURPS.

So what they need to do is put together ads for books like City Stats and Tactical Shooting...
