Race/class discard and monsters

When encountering monsters that would not chase player if he hadn't been a specific race/class, is it possible to discard those and still get away without fight?

Yes. You can discard a Class or Race at any time.

Thank you.

A second thought: what if, hypothetically, monster had an ability to harm (e.g. level drain) even successfully fleeing munchkins? Does the discard count as fleeing in that case?

Discarding does not count as Running Away.

Running Away is when your combat strength does not beat the combat strength of the monster and you must roll the die to find out if its bad stuff affects you.

Discarding your race is just discarding your race and a separate mechanic and not the same thing.

Re: Race/class discard and monsters

I have a question that takes place later in the process:

Once you have already rolled to Run Away and lost, can you discard Races/Classes to prevent Bad Stuff? There are several monsters that make you lose items based on Race/Class bonuses, or items that are more than +2 bonus, which includes those items like that Elf helmet that have two layers of bonuses (+1 normally or +3 for Elves I believe). If you discard your Elf race, that item will now only give +1, so would it fall under the Bad Stuff?

My interpretation of the general Munchkin philosophy is that when negative effects are still being resolved, you can't make other moves except in the case of using Wishing Rings to cancel a Curse. Thus, when Bad Stuff hits, you can't change around things before you deal with the Bad Stuff--you have to immediately resolve its effects first.

Am I right?

As far as I know...yes.

Absolutely. You can't dodge (or manipulate) the effects of the Bad Stuff by maneuvering cards around unless you have a card that specifically allows for it.

As soon as you fail to run away the bad stuff takes place. It takes place based on the state that your munchkin was in at the time that you failed to run away. So if you were an elf when you rolled the die to run away then you suffer the bad stuff as an elf.

However...

If you wanted to try and avoid some bad stuff if you fail a run away roll, then you could have discarded your race/class before you rolled to run away. Then, once you fail to run away and the bad stuff kicks in you're no longer an elf (for example) and elf-specific bad stuff doesn't affect you.

Re: Race/class discard and monsters

The attempt to roll the die, the rolling of the die, and the resolution of the bad stuff are all the same "event" unless a card specifies just one of them.

So you could discard your race or class before the roll, but NOT between the roll and the resolution of the bad stuff.
