It's a distraction, but it's also a cover story: you all found an island with fairly rich metal deposits. You can't exploit it yourselves because of the size, but offering the location would give you a way into other deals. That would at least explain why none of you has any experience as a merchant yet you're going around being merchants (let's face it, you will never get a decent value for what you sell if you rely on defaults).

The other option is that you are merchants but your normal sales guy dropped out (retired, sleepwalked off the edge of the island, whatever) and you're looking for someone to replace them. Depending on how seriously you take that search I'll either have to put in a new NPC or open up for a PC, who will be a local that you'll need to work with. Of course that assumes that you make a definite effort to hire someone; you could just ignore the issue and pretend to be looking.

Well I can use a spell for finding iron or for making iron, but I can't do both. Any opinions from anyone else?

A minor point: if you go for that option, the island you are trying to sell doesn't actually have to exist; as long as you don't get yourselves to the point of finalising a deal and having to give someone the location of it, you don't actually need to even come up with more than a vague direction for it to be in. All you would need then are some samples of the metal you've found.

Oh. That does make things a bit easier.

I'm not entirely certain we even have any iron. I'm really confused about the plan and what actions, if any, were taken in the time between arrival and now to prepare for this.

I was under the impression we were traveling as iron merchants and converting rock into iron ore or raw iron as we journeyed.

Right, but then we learned that there's no way we could have gotten iron here. Does everyone agree with me making samples and then us pretending we know the location of a large island with a vein?

I'm still here, but I can't think of any way to be useful in this situation so I'm assuming Jorin is just sorta following along with whatever everyone else does. I'm still here, though.

Same. I'm letting the fake merchants search around, as Jacob is their fake guard.
