[OOC] Monster Mash

Recruiting is open until... some time in the future.

EDIT: Due to confusion, I am adding the following:

The monsters are having a party! You're invited! If you're a vampire, werewolf, animated corpse, walking fish, or some other creature that clearly does not fit into human society on any day other than October 31st.

This game is intended to be a lighthearted romp, set in 1935.

The characters, of course, are all monsters. I'm thinking of the Universal monsters here.

Some heavily suggested possible characters:

Count Dracula
Frankenstein's Monster
The Wolf Man
The Mummy

Feel free to rip these directly from fiction!

I will be choosing four or five characters (or more!), depending on the submissions I receive.

This is definitely not first-come, first-served.

Characters will be 500 points, with an additional 150 in disads (including quirks).

Please don't feel the need to use all of the available disad points if it doesn't fit your concept.

I'll probably too lazy to keep this first post edited with the answers to any questions that come up.

"I was working in the lab late one night when my eyes beheld an eerie sight..."

So, should any monsters for this be drawn from fiction of that era (1930s), or are other sources (myths, for example), also fair game?

Sure, that'd be cool! Some things are appropriate depending on how they're handled (a medusa or a tengu) and others are not (a robot or atomic horror).

The things I don't want are either from some other genre, such as fantasy (elves and dwarves) or science fiction (with the robots). But drawing from other cultures' mythologies is something I'd like to see.

One more thing: nothing too human. I am willing to make exceptions. A nine foot tall giant is out. A cyclops... probably out too.

Cool, I'll see what I can come up with. Oh, and if anyone plays Frankenstein's Monster, you are obligated to put at least one point into Dance.

Does "The Crypt Kicker Five" count as one character or as five?

That would depend on how you built it. :)

I could see it being one character with four allies, or one character with five heads and ten arms and legs.

This game needs a Creature from the Black lagoon, for old time's sake.

The discovery of the artifact rocked Gill-man worldlore to its core. Here was stunning evidence of a far superior race having existed in the Upper Reaches. Tsi'thbstii resolved to go in search of the rest of the find. Months of searching were fruitless, until one of the porters remarked that the current there flowed down from one Black Lagoon, a place no Gill-man had ever returned from. Determined to find the source of the artifact, Tsi'thbstii ignored all warnings and vanished into the mist.

He hasn't been seen since, and his brother Su'thbstu has decided to find him or die in the attempt.

Would something like the Svartálfar or Dvergar from Norse mythology be acceptable? Although they are technically elves and dwarves, respectively, they are rather distinct from that depicted in certain fantasy rpgs.

Those were actually exactly what I was thinking of when I mentioned elves and dwarves. Tolkien did those in. And those are more fairy tale creatures than monsters. And we've all played those characters in a hundred different games. They don't inspire stilted dialog in all they meet like The Creature From The Black Lagoon. Crazy old bats don't come out of the woodworks to hunt them down.

I'm looking for monsters. Something a 1930's studio bigwig would consider scary, not something he'd put in a Coca-Cola commercial.

Fair enough. I'm having trouble thinking of something that fits in with that mindset that I would want to play, so perhaps I'll sit this one out. Best of luck with the game.

Okay :)

Feel free to post anything else you think of, though, if something comes to mind.

This bit puzzles me... vampires are very human in appearance, wolfmen are human most of the time, the Invisible Man is a human, albeit a crazy invisible one. This would also let out Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde.

And here I was going to suggest Chick Young or Wilbur Grey types with a lot of Luck and Serendipity...

Right you are. I need to make up some sort of explanation here.

I'm having a wee bit of trouble doing so.

With the movie monsters, they have a defined set of qualities that make them monstrous.

They have special rules that govern their existence. Dracula can do all sorts of vampire stuff, and he has special rules for killing him.

The wolf man can only be killed by silver, and the moon has something to do with his abilities.

Frankenstein's monster... just look at him.

The mummy is a mummy. There's all sorts of magic involved. Or something.

My primary concern here is that each character have a set of tropes available that easily defines them as being monsters. That can either be because of some set of attributes they possess (being a giant fish-man) or because they've entered the collective consciousness as such (the wolf-man).

Maybe I should have given out a list of acceptable 'monsters' to choose from. Or made my criteria something along the lines of 'can reasonably be expected to be seen chilling out at Dracula's castle.' Something like that.

Don't bother if you don't feel like it... it was more of a joke than anything else. I'd probably be more interested in playing the Golem, although I'm undecided between the 1915 and 1920 German version or the 1936 French version.

No, I want to see it. Had been meaning to, actually. It's just always slipped my mind. Besides, I know one of those guys that owns every DVD ever.

Well, I didn't get the response I expected for this.

Unless I get a lot of submissions today, this game is a no go.

Apologies -- I meant to pull something together, but these last two weeks have been nuts at the newspaper.

If there's any extension to the deadline, I'll see about putting together a Cousin of Frankenstein. I'd try the Invisible Man instead, but I just can't see it. :-)

Sure!

I just didn't want this to be a hulking, dead thing that shambled around for a month before it finally got put down.

Err... that might not be the right wording.

Yeah, I think that concept is just a little too transparent, anyway.
