If you draw a race or class card can it be given away for charity or does it go right to discard pile? I thought I read somewhere that it went to discard so thats the way we have been playing.

If you kick open a door and find a Race or Class, you may either play it or place it into your hand. You may discard a Race or Class in play at any time, but you cannot discard one directly from your hand unless something else allows (or requires) you to discard.

Charity happens ONLY at the end of your own turn, and yes, you may give Race or Class cards from your hand as Charity.
