Lazy, part1

Ive noticed a surplus of 15card expansions. Not that i don't like them but is it bad business to create some munchkin with substance or is S.J. games just getting lazy.

It has been made clear that people want more of these quick, simple, tightly-themed boosters. It has nothing to do with lazy, and, to be honest, from what experience I've had with reviewing and playtesting the sets I've seen so far, they take a fair amount of work to develop because they're small and you have to pick and choose which jokes to keep and which cards best represent the set. Nope, not lazy at all.

Will we see any bigger sets in the future.

Obviously, is just marketing. The 15-card expansion are easier to make, to playtest and to lauch. Few cards are easier to fill into a theme. And they are selling well enough for them to keep doing them.

Andrew said in the forum recently (about 2 days ago) that there are currently two stand-alone new sets in production. One is for the next year, other for 2012, probably.

And still more ideas for expansions for Munchkin and Quest, not only boosters...

Ok, per Andrew, we should see lots of things this next year as it is Munchkin's 10 birthday. One of them, I think, was a full on, new core set. Things that were hinted about were a couple of full expansions and they seem to love the new booster packs.

We have 4 booster packs between now and December and GAUL to fix the older decks.

But remember, SJ Games does not discuss unreleased games, or unnamed games, or unknown games, or Andrew's puns.

The boosters are advantageous for SJ Games on several fronts:
1) They don't take as long to develop, illustrate, lay out, and edit, which is a real concern when we're ALSO updating and reprinting nearly every Munchkin product;
2) They let us try some things (Fairy Dust cards, Santa monsters) that might not support even a 56-card expansion; and
3) Fans dig 'em, as evidenced by sales figures and reactions we hear at conventions and on the forums.

The really lazy approach would have been to tell everyone, "Eh, we're busy upgrading all our old stuff, so come back next year if you want NEW Munchkin." The problem is, when you tell people to come back later, some of them don't. We don't want our fans to wander off, so this was a compromise that let us focus a lot of our energy on the reprints, but still put out new content as well. (And, I'll add, we DID release Munchkin Cthulhu 4, which is a more substantial expansion.)

Next year, we have a new 168-card core set planned, at LEAST one new tuckbox expansion and probably two, and, yes, more boosters -- because we like them, fans like them, and retailers REALLY like them.
