The Shadow Nose Bad Stuff

In the Bad Stuff of the Shadow Nose it says: You cannot flee, it automatically catches you. Lose 3 Levels.

I first thought the "You cannot flee" wasn't supposed to be in the Bad stuff section of the card but rather in the monster description. Therefore it would be an inescapable monster.

But my girlfriend suggested that it simply states that you could not escape and therefore lose 3 levels.

So my question is: who is right?

You are correct. No one can escape the Shadow Nose, normally. There are cards (or actions, like sacrificing a Hireling) which allow you to escape, even when escape is impossible.

I believe that "Cannot Escape" means that you do not have to roll a die, so a "Loaded Die" card, which would normally allow you to flip the die to whatever number you want (6, to run away), would be pointless to use in this case.

Am I correct to assume that sacrificing a hireling is an action established later than the original version of Munchkin? I haven't heard of that.

You are correct. This was actually initially started in Star Munchkin (with Sidekicks), and propagated through Munchkin Fu (Mooks), Munchkin Bites! (Minions), Super Munchkin (Sidekicks), The Good The Bad And The Munchkin (Sidekicks) and introduced to Munchkin with Hirelings in Need For Steed and the tradition continued in De-Ranged.

Of course, the FAQ discusses all the different "Hireling" class cards in Important Clarification #5, near the top, and we need to fix it, since the introduction of M4. Then again, that's all part of a much larger project. . .

Also, if you are not playing with a set that includes the "sacrifice a Hireling to get away" rule, that rule is NOT in force.
