Re: [IC] Keeping in the Black

Kevin catches Mills just outside the door.
Leaning nonchalantly on the wall, he scratched yet another match on his knee, briefly filling the air with the pungent smell of sulphur. He lights a new cigarette and tosses the match towards the curb.

"Howdy. So, why do you think so badly of Hiram?"

Hiram?” he glances briefly towards the shop “It’s fair to say he’s one of the rare decent folk on this rock.”

He took a long pull on his smoke, pushing himself off the wall he had been resting on.

“I ain’t got nothing against the man. I just thought that a few starter uppers like yourself could use a bit of leverage.”

"What business did you have here, anyway, dude?"

Still facing Kevin, Mills eyes went toward Marcus. The young man didn't answer right away. He simply eyed the medic from head to toe, obviously sizing him up.

"That's mighty straightforward of you, pops."

His eyes went back to Kevin.

“So, did you get a good deal out of it?”

Kevin nods slightly. "The prices were already pretty good -- plus he's throwing in a couple week's free parking -- and he dropped 'em 15%. So, I suppose I oughta thank you." He puts out a hand. "I'm Kevin Suzuki."

Hiram seems to always have at least a little exaggeration in everything he says.

Rayna'd marked her list by priority. The urgent ones are getting loaded into the back of a hovertruck by yard workers. Hiram's assuming the rest can wait until the ship comes to him. The driver yells over, "We'll be going in fifteen minutes. I can fit two of you in the cab if you want a lift."

Mills raises his brow in something of a show of admiration.

“Fifteen hey? Shiny.”

He grabbed Kevin’s outstretched hand firmly.

Jonas Miller. Folks just call me Mills. So, getting ready to head out in the ‘verse?”

"Good to meet you, Mills. You can call me Kevin. We'll head out soon as we find a job and get our ship into good shape -- she'll be a classic, but right now she's more like dead weight. What about you? You a spacer?"

"Pops, huh... haven't heard that one since I retired from army. Straightforward? Well, I don't know any other way, I ask what is on my mind, and to be honest, I like when people get stunned by it."

Letting go of Kevin’s hand, Mills cocked his head toward Marcus.

“Well, ain’t that a treat.” Said Mills, smiling broadly at Marcus before going back to Kevin.

“Matter of fact is, I am. Worked mostly as a crewman and navigator on a few courier ships.”

Taking the smoke out of his mouth, Mills gave a quick look around.

“Been stuck on this rock for a few months now. Last boat I was on got impounded on the account of someone not making payments to someone else.”

Mills threw his hands in the air.

“Not that I had anything to do with that. So yea, been slumming ‘round these parts for some time now, trying to find a piece of honest work.”

OOC: @MisterJuan: I'm wondering if Kevin knows whether Mills' claim that he had nothing to do with the impounding is a lie. He succeeds Detect Lies by 2. Can Mills beat that with his Fast-Talk (or is he telling the truth)?

"A navigator, you say? Well, I'm not in charge of hiring crew, but I think you should come along to talk to the captain. We don't have a full-time navigator yet, and I don't think it would hurt to have another crewman -- especially if you know enough to help out with the repairs."
