Absolute Curse Insanity
I just recently hosted an epic Munchkin game, all cards, sets 1-7, and things got a little out of hand. We did not use any house rules, with the exception of a few custom cards, and near the end of the game some incredibly weird situations began popping up.
Let me set the scene. We were in the Dungeon of Comprehensive Curses, which makes any cast or played curse affect the entire party. I was wearing the Magnificent Hat, which randomly reflects a curse cast on me to another player. I was also riding the mutant gerbil steed and was an epic wizard, both of which give me a roll to escape a curse. Player 2 was wearing the tinfoil hat, which makes him immune to curses cast by another player. Player 3 was affected normally by curses. Player 4 was riding a steed equipped with the plastic nun, which makes the steed immune to curses (and the player riding it? we played as though the answer was no, but it could be yes i suppose). P4 was also an epic wizard, able to run away from curses. Player 5 was affected normally by curses, as was P6. Ok. Given all this, I cast the income tax curse, which says (roughly) this: "You must now discard an item, and every other player must now discard an item of equal or better value or lose a level" What happens? Here's how it played out for us: Because of the dungeon, the curse applies to everyone, but the curse already applies to everyone, sort of. So we had the curse individually hit each player in turn, but of course every time this happened the entire party was hit as well. In effect, the curse's effects were multiplied 6x - We all lost a lot of items. So anyway, the curse first "hit" me. However, I could reflect curses, so when it applied to me, we reflected it randomly. It ended up hitting P5, and he discarded an item of "x" gold pieces. However, the secondary effect of the curse hitting P5 also hit me, and should have been reflected. (we realized how confusing this would be and chose to just ignore that part). So the curse went around the table, hitting everyone in turn and consequently hitting the entire party 6 times. But not me or P2, who were both immune to curses, and P4 ran away from almost every instance. My question is, are we making it more complicated than we should have, or did we just stumble into a Munchkin situation of riduculously confusing proportions???? :/ |
Re: Absolute Curse Insanity
Income Tax + Dungeon of Comprehensive Curses IS a nasty combination. Yes, 6 items must be discarded by each player, unless some of the 6 curses get nullified.
As for how reflection or redirection works... I defer to the rule of rule disputes must be settled with really loud shouting. |
Re: Absolute Curse Insanity
Yeah we weren't (and still aren't) sure if the "secondary" effects of the curse are also reflected/negated/run away from... one would think so, which just means we had an incredibly confusing situation on our hands. I hate that dungeon. haha.

Aww, but they don't actually effect everyone the same, the actual cursed player gets to choose how much he gets to hurt everyone else.
Now, whether the other players can evade the secondary effects as if it was a separate curse... That's a good question. |
