The Caster Gun (Outlaw Star)
What kind of damage does the Caster Gun from Outlaw Star do? Crushing with the Cosmic modifier? Corrosion with the Cosmic modifier?
I think it has a high "Costs Fatigue" Limitation on the higher damaging shells. But, it is certainly a Unique Gadget in any event. |

Depends in the shell being used. Frex, one of the shells (forgot the numbers) looked a lot like an implosion grenade effect or a vortex grenade effect from UT.
Personally, I'd draw up a list of ammo types, each with different effects and damage. As for actual damage numbers? I'd put it in the 6d range easily with a nice armor divisor or just straight up Cosmic modifier. Also remember that casters seemed able to cancel out each others' effects. |

I'll have to actually watch the series again to find out what each shell does. So far, I haven't found an online resource that has consistently and comprehensively cataloged them.

Edit: also, since the shells are half magic/half technology, do you think the mana level of an area would effect the weapon's power? |

I suspect it will have half or a fourth effect, simply because corelations seem to either be linear or quadradic in nature. It's really up to the GM if there's any corelation at all, though. Aka, this is all BS that's up to you (I usually side with whatever makes it Fun).

Which weapon skill, and by extension, Fast-Draw skill are we looking at here?

Well, anyone can use it, so I'd lean towards one of the Gun skills. The biggest problem is that Caster Guns seem to be unique items, each with their own handles, targeting mechanisms, etc. One character in Outlaw Star has one that almost looks like a bow or crossbow if I remember correctly.
Since Gun is an Easy skill, I'd probably make a new skill for Gun (Caster) and apply a generous default to Pistol and Rifle. There would be decent familiarity penalties for picking up a new one though, and HEAVY penalties for someone who hasn't used one before and is defaulting from Pistol or other. As far as Fast-Draw goes, I'd default from Pistol again, but would require a skill *for that specific caster-gun,* as there are major differences between one and another. |

Wow, I didn't know how I missed your previous reference to Powers. In any case, i'll be trying to stat out this sucker sometime over the weekend. The size (Bulk) and weight will be tricky.

Eh, I'd probably design it with Powers in any game I used it in.
Maybe "Magery (Uses Guns (Caster) skill, Gadget Limitations, With Specially Designed Cartridge Ammo Only)?" Then buy the Caster Gun as Signature Gear for a little plot protection. Then I'd have NPCs make and sell the cartridges as "Scroll" items, maybe with some of the changes from Thaum p107. |
