Potion of Cowardice

I have a few assumptions, please correct me otherwise:

Potion of Cowardice not only makes players run from a combat, but they HAVE to roll the dice as well or face the Bad Stuff.

You do have to roll the dice to run away, that's part of running away...if you succeed the Bad Stuff doesn't happen to you; the Potion of Cowardice just forces you to run away.

This is exactly correct.

Hnn, ok, but if you have something that gives you automatic escape, you don't have to roll, right? Like, the Shoes Of Only Having To Run Faster Than YOU or something like this...

Right. It's a normal Run Away attempt in every respect, except that you don't have the choice to stay and fight.

Re: Potion of Cowardice

So does this mean that sidekicks and be sacked to avoid the potion of cowardice? Cause my friend said that I can not use the sidekick I am already being forced to running away.

Re: Potion of Cowardice

You can't avoid the Potion of Cowardice by using a Sidekick (or Hireling or Mook or Minion), but you can use a Sidekick to escape from the Monster(s) since that is part of running away. In other words, Potion of Cowardice creates a situation where you must now Run Away (i.e, it's an instant loss). To Run Away, you must roll one die per Monster and get a 5 or a 6 to avoid the Bad Stuff for that Monster or you may discard your Hireling/Sidekick/Mook/Minion and avoid rolling for all the Monsters and suffer no Bad Stuff (other than losing your Hireling). In other, other words, your friend is mistaken about what a Hireling/Sidekick/Mook/Minion does or when it can be used. It is part of Running Away, not instead of.

When you say Hirelings can be discarded to avoid rolling, does this mean you have to decide to sack the Hireling before you roll? Or can you roll the die hoping for a 5 or 6, but on a 4 or lower, then decide to sack the Hireling?

Re: Potion of Cowardice

Sacrifice your Hireling instead of rolling; So you can't Sacrifice him after a Bad Run Away roll.

MunchkinMan 09-22-2009 06:28 AM

Re: Potion of Cowardice

The rules surrounding the "hireling" discard to escape say that this is something you do instead of rolling, so no, you may not roll and then decide to have your Hireling/Sidekick/Mook/Minion sacrifice himself for you.

Re: Potion of Cowardice

If someone tries to throw down a "Out to Lunch", since you're are now in the progress of running away, Out to Lunch would fail or not work, correct?

Andrew Hackard 07-28-2010 08:52 AM

Re: Potion of Cowardice

Once you have stated your intent to Run Away, Out To Lunch is not a valid play.

Thought so, thanks Andrew.

Re: Potion of Cowardice

I know this thread is old, but I have question that directly belongs to it.
As I understood, potion of cowardice make you roll a dice to try to run away and face bad stuff if fails. It seems unbalancely too powerfull for 300 gold pieces potion, as it can successfully KILL an infinitely strong player that just don't have an automatic escape, right?
And second question, can a player remove monster with magic lamp or wizard-charm it after being played with? Or ANY action that affects monster are defined as fighting, thus making it impossible to use for a cowardiced PCs?

Re: Potion of Cowardice

It forces you to have to Run Away. It does not force you to use only the option where you must roll a die to escape. If you have valid options for automatic escape, you may use them. Wizard's charm spell isn't valid, since that's a combat option, nor is Pollymorph Potion, but Magic Lamp can be used even after a failed die roll in an attempt to Run Away, so that would be a valid play. So would sacrificing a Hireling (rules found in Munchkin 4 and Munchkin 5).
