Feint and All-out attack questions

Is it possible to do an all-out attack (determined) and feint at +4?

How about if you AoA (determined) and use a combination that includes a feint, would the +4 bonus apply to that feint?

Why shouldn't it?

Re: Feint and All-out attack questions

I always assumed it was a given as well. I was being challenged on using AoA (determined) with a feint so I went through the rules for a specific example of a feint being used this way and came up with nothing.

Nothing under AoA or under feints directly says that this can be done. Without a direct reference specifically say "yes this can be done" I cant seem to convince my challenger.

Can anyone help me find a reference?

It strikes me as a very risky maneuver since it leaves you wide open to an attack from your opponent.

On a strict reading of the rules I'd say that your challenger could argue that under AoA (Determined) it states "Make a single attack..." and under Feint it states "This maneuver is not an attack...".

I could mentally justify this by assuming that the determined part of the AoA meant that you were overcommitting to the attack in order to be sure of hitting, which doesn't seem compatible with the idea of a feint, which needs to be contained enough to disguise the real attack that follows.

MA covers switching attacks for feints when it talks about multiple attacks, and it says that modifiers, such as determined, also apply to feints.

Ah, yes. On MA p. 97 it explicitly says "Other alternatives include using All Out Attack (Determined) to feint at +4".

Im playing in a combat arena where skills are capped so eventually nobody will really have a skill advanatge over the other. Feints will be all about luck of the roll.

I though about using a grappler who does nothing but AoA. Once you get you hands on your opponant you might never need a defense anyways. Using defensive feints as part of an AoA or combo gives you a huge feint advantage and stacks even more modifiers for your opponant to just plain miss.

I'd expect that you'll lose, as Defensive Telegraphed Attacks will get through your guard faster than your AoA will get through Mr. Defensive's guard. Heck, you can succeed in a Grapple attempt and Mr. Defensive can still make a Telegraphed attack, canceling out the penalty for your grapple!

All Out Attack against competent, active opponents is a mug's game in GURPS.

Yes. There are only a few good uses:
  1. When attacking by surprise or from behind.
  2. When shooting a missile weapon from well beyond the enemy's range (often the same as #1).
  3. When using a long weapon from the back ranks of a solid formation to strike at a foe with a short weapon.
  4. When flanking a foe or saturating his defenses in a battle where he's outnumbered 3:1 or worse.
  5. When finishing a helpless opponent.
  6. When facing a foe whose main mode of attack allows no active defense in the first place.

And yet people keep doing it, to my overwhelming joy as a GM...

I actually have fodder monsters - particularly the unintelligent types like zombies - AoA *constantly*, usually (Determined). This speeds up play considerably (I don't need to bother rolling defense for the fodder, who I don't particularly care about anyway), and means I don't need to tack high levels of combat skill onto weak monsters in order to give them a chance to hurt the PCs.

I usually compensate for this by tripling the amount of fodder I think is necessary. It seems to be working so far.
