[Dungeon Fantasy] What is a stick ?

I have both DF pdfs and I want to know, what is a stick (for example Thrown Weapon (Stick)) ? Is a stick a staff ? Are both the same things or are they different ?

I am asking this because I was building a Druid character and wanted her Staff to be a enhanced with the Staff enchantment and bought as Signature Gear only to find out that it is worth only 40$. Fine I tought, I'll make it a fine staff then make it ornate so I can also use it as a Powestone, using the same example shown at p.28 of DF: Adventurers. Then I look at the details of the ornate modifier only to find out that it is available for all weapons except improvised weapons, projectiles, and sticks. Can I make my staff ornate or not ?

Yes, I would say. I don't see why not. I mean, you're just jabbing little pretties into the staff and making it look nice.

However, if you want to go with worth... why not pick up a holy pendant or somesuch? If you're already going with "ornate staff"...

A staff is not a stick. Yes, it's made of wood. But it's a lot longer. Remember that a stick is a thrown weapon. A piece of solid wood five or six feet long would be heavy and awkward to throw. It's kind of like the difference between a knife and a two-handed sword; the skill Thrown Weapon (Knife) doesn't apply to hurling your greatsword! Most "sticks" would be about as long as a knife, or maybe a shortsword at most.

Probably the definitive "Thrown Weapon (Stick)" weapon is the boomerang, a stick designed to be thrown for maximum effectiveness. Batons are also valid weapons, IMO. I wouldn't consider a "staff" of any type larger than a baton to be thrown in such a manner as a "stick", but YMMV.

Ahhhh, just found it in Basic Set but still can't find it in the Equipment section ??? That's funny, am I missing something ? What's the use of putting a skill without the weapon to use it ? :)

I like the combination of Signature Gear (Magic Staff) with Weapon Bond. I also didn't want put more than one point in Signature Gear.

Sorry, several skills in the Basic Set were put there to cover future releases: Jitte/Sai, Tonfa, Thrown Weapon (Stick) . . . Two answers, then.

First, a wizard's staff is no mere stick. You can raise its price arbitrarily high by saying, "Mine has an $11,000 gem in the tip." DF is fairly clear on this. Work out the staff's value with all the CFs for weapon modifications, and then add any amount of value at the very end.

Second, per Martial Arts, here's what sticks are:

BOOMERANG (p. 231) – Australia. An angled, more aerodynamic THROWING STICK (p. 225) designed for hunting. Doesn't return; returning versions are unsuitable as weapons and in any event wouldn't return if they hit. The GM may make an exception for martial artists with Throwing Art! Treat as a BATON (p. B273) if used as a club.

THROWING STICK (p. 231) – Universal. Any heavy stick balanced enough to throw.

Code:

TL Weapon          Damage    Acc  Range  Weight  RoF  Shots  Cost  ST  Bulk
THROWN WEAPON (STICK) (DX-4)

0  Boomerang      sw cr    2    ×6/×10 1      1    T(1)  $20  6  -2
0  Throwing Stick  sw-1 cr  1    ×4/×8  1      1    T(1)  $10  6  -2

Great answer as always, thanks ! Darn, again, I'm missing something because I don't have Martial Arts. I'll definately have to buy it now. Now I need to decide between searchable PDF or hardback...

What!?!?

You are missing more than something not having Martial Arts!

That book will change your role playing life! ;-D

You're missing a lot. To me the perk section alone was worth it.

Until I get they invent a cheap portable device (iPod sized) pdf viewer, I'd stick with the books... but I drool just imagining having my entire GURPS collection in my hand... I once actually got off on the wrong bus stop with a bag ful of 3e books... my shoulder hurts just from remembering carrying that. Still, they're great for a quick reference while playing.

Is that true for Thrown Weapon (Dart) (B226) as well, or is it a bug that darts aren't mentioned on B276?

[Edit: Well, actually darts are mentioned (under Spear Thrower), but not the Thrown Weapon (Dart) skill.]

The plumbata, from Martial Arts p231, is thrown with the Dart skill. That's the only statted example I know of.

I've gone with a not-cheap but reasonably priced used tablet PC from ebay. $230 got me a crusty old Fujitsu from 2000 with a 5x8" screen that runs Windows XP (not any funky tablet edition, just regular old XP) and therefore will happily run Foxit Reader for lightweight PDF reading.

It ALSO runs GCA, Word, Excel, and Firefox, meaning it handles everything I could want for gaming. It's pretty cool.

The ellipsis (. . .) was there to suggest that it's true for a whole clutch of things. If you can find a skill with no corresponding weapon in the Basic Set, I can promise you that (1) David Pulver and I did it on purpose, and (2) suitable weapons will show up in Martial Arts (now published) or Low-Tech (WIP).
