Free GURPS 3D Dungeons
Would anyone be interested? These would be free of course. With the release of the new Dungeon pdf's I thought I'd offer my services.
Creating these would not be that hard for me. I've played around with the idea of using your standard 1" Hex Dungeon and I'm more than confident that I can make them. But would anyone bother to make and build them? I won't to be honest because I already have an extensive square paper dungeon. Check out the Downloads at Dungeon Crawlers or my Paper Terrain section in the forums and just let me know if it is something the GURPS community would be interested in. I can do many skins on the dungeons, secret doors, traps, all in 3D. |
Re: Free GURPS 3D Dungeons
Well, I for one, would be interested. It's rather hard to find decent stuff with overlaid hex grids for gurps combat

Re: Free GURPS 3D Dungeons
Would it be possible to print the floors of existing models on transparencies? (like the ones for overhead projectors) Then just place the paper models over a hex map.

I would definitely be interested.

Re: Free GURPS 3D Dungeons
Here is an idea of what I'm talking about
1" Hex 3D Dungeon Other Link Now this is just a prototype. I've made several 3D dungeons for grid style maps. The unique challenge of a Hex is your going to need more pieces for all the different possibilities. The figure in the picture is roughly to scale of a normal 25mm figure. So is that something the GURPS community would build and use? |
Re: Free GURPS 3D Dungeons
Here is a pic of some of the individual pieces
So pretty much each wall piece is mounted on its own floor tile and you have blank floor tiles as well. I'm also working on stairs, raised platforms and possible a sewer system. |
Re: Free GURPS 3D Dungeons
If you are serious about these and want to be a part of the beta builds go to this forum here. If your just interested and want to leave your two cents post here or there I don't care :)

Re: Free GURPS 3D Dungeons
Your sample layout totally rocks. I'm really hoping you get the chance to create these in detail!
A practical question: do you have blank pieces (with fold lines, etc.) that you lay textures onto before printing, or do you generally design with a generic dungeon-wall image already in place? |
Re: Free GURPS 3D Dungeons
Normally I unfold them then lay textures on in Photoshop. I always keep a blank copy in case I want to do different textures like Grey tight fitting stone to a field stone look. The more options the better.
The more I play with this the more I like this design then your standard square grid dungeons. You can definately get more options out of the hex. With this being 1" hex it will even fit the larger "click" style miniatures. This would allow it to be used by RPG and standard miniatures games. |

I just laid in a small supply of cardstock, I could whip up and example. |

Hey, I just saw your samples, and they are really cool! I'm not sure about how this works in practice, but I really like it! The style of your mini/token is very good, too. I was searching for a 3D approach months ago. Hm... how is handled facing in tactical combat with these tokens? PS: regarding the 3D aspect of this, is there any chance of you releasing these excellent 3D objects as building bocks for creating dungeons within some 3D sofware, like Maya, 3Dmax or the free Blender? I'm very interested, and soon ready to experimentate a bit with Blender and some trials for getting the trick of designing & rendering 3D images for using them while roleplaying sessions. If you want to share or talk about 3D design, please PM me. Cheers EDIT: OK, I read and wrote this in a hurry. Now, I understand how it is: physical 3D dungeons, assembled from cardboards and glued. Minis: normal minis (not paper tokens), so normal facing. Anyway, the "virtual" 3D dungeon idea for online gaming is appealing for me. |
Re: Free GURPS 3D Dungeons
I'd be more than happy to offer the 3D models in a .3DS file for those that want it when I'm finished. Or for those that want to lend a hand in the project.
More options with Hexes compared to you standard grid 3D dungeon. This is of course if you go by the rule that you must have a completely unobstructed hex or grid to place a figure. If your going to just place wall over an existing map then there are tons of commercial products that you can do that with or even my own free dungeons. I want to do a nice Hex 3D Dungeon. My first hurdle came today with curved walls! Look at this picture here. The small curved wall, takes up one hex, works fine. But doing a larger curved wall just does not look right. Now I could do it with a perfect curve, but it would not leave unobstructed hexes to move figures on. In the picture I settled for an angled version. But even that does not look right. If you have a suggestion I would love to hear it. I could also do "Thin" walls where its just a single pieces of thick card but it just does not look right for a dungeon. I like doing thin walls for buildings, just not dungeons. |

I meant printing out paper models made for square grids and replaceing the floors with clear plastic. Support plus you can place the models on a blank a hex map. But then models made for hex maps in the first place would be cooler for GURPS. Charleson Mambo |
Re: Free GURPS 3D Dungeons
Yeah I suppose you could do that. It would have to be fairly thick to make sure it did not bend or crease.
The only problem you would get is overlapping of some hexes. Otherwise it would work just fine I'd imagine. Now I'm trying to leave a clear path of unobstructed hexes, does that matter to everyone, I figured it did but then I could be wrong. |

Re: Free GURPS 3D Dungeons
1" hexes are a bit large and overscalled for 25mm. I went with 3/4" hexes myself. It also about being able to put a large area on the table surface.

Re: Free GURPS 3D Dungeons
These are really cool. Good work.

Out of curiosity, what miniature manufacturer do you use that fits 25mm figs in 3/4" hexes suitable or gaming? |

Yeah thats a great site. I've downloaded all the BSG stuff but have not yet built any.

Started on the Textures
Just to let you all know I have been still working on this project.
Here is what I'm proposing as the base texture (without dirt, grunge, slime, vines, etc.) Large Image Small Image Let me know what you think of the texture arrangement. |

Also, in GURPS you don't need a whole hex to put a figure on it, but I see that preserving this limitation will make your tiles more generic and useful. About the thin walls, and maybe the solution for the curve problem, why put all your walls crossing the middle of your hex? why not this: Your wall: -@@ WWW -@@ Alternative wall: -@@ @@@ -WW Placement: -@@------@@ @@@----@@@ -WW-WW-WW -----@@@ ------@@ I hope the fonts in your browser use the same spacing than in mine, so you can get a sense os what I'm talking about... |
Re: Free GURPS 3D Dungeons
BTW, your links are going to the machwarrior section of your gallery, I had to dig a little to find the hex tiles prototipes.
