Slight variant of that. Prepaid Debit cards (basically a $10 fee instead of the gift card's $5 or so). You can get them at most of these check cashing 'services'. The differences are a) you can put whatever amount of cash you want to spend, which may make a difference: Gift Cards tend to start pricey and go up.

b) You may have a fee to change your card balance. That is pay to put money in and pay again to spend it.

c) make sure to use it at least once a year.

It's more headache than a gift card, but you can put $15 into it instead of buying a $50 or $100 dollar gift card.

To be honest however, I'd skip both of them and open a small account at a credit union or bank (preferably one other than your main account) and use that account to buy online. If the big bad Phishers rob your account, they don't get much cash and being in a different instution, they can't really access your main bank account(s).

I just picked up DFA: 2 and DFA: 3.

I noticed in DFA: 2, page 10 under "Good (Three-Headed) Doggie!", there is the italicized caption "Soothe the Savage Breast" (emphasis mine). I'm taking it that this is a typo?
