Steel is used in the exteriors of ships. It's fairly cheap, it's got (especially with what we, in the 21st century would consider super exotic alloys) pretty good strength to mass ratios, and has a bunch of other properties that make it useful for ship exteriors. Interiors are pretty well steel free, though. There's no need to something that dense. Interior ship wall and floors are made of carbon composites, plastics, and aluminum alloy.
Interior surfaces are all coated in friction matting, which can act like short pile carpet, Velcro, or other soft surface coating, depending on what the surface it's on is for. It's self-cleaning, and is hooked into the organic recycle, so spilt liquids, shed skin cells, and other dirt get reused. Shipboard clothing and shoes are normally made of similar stuff, so you stick them to walls.

I'm pretty sure that vacuum propulsion would be a perk.

Walking in vacuum isn't a problem. It's moving across empty space that is. That requires a thrust source -- a rocket, or compressed gas jet or the like -- that's probably a bit more than a perk. I suspect it's some sort of flight, but haven't thought about it.
