back with my old group we were arguing about dnd 3.5 compared to five, they were ******** on it saying dnd 3.5 was good. When I pointed out the problems I had with it they just said they could houserule those parts out.

" You know by that logic FATAL is a good rpg since I can just house-rule all the bad parts out."

I run into that a lot. Some people have the astonishing notion that if a good GM can compensate for a bad rule that somehow redeems the bad rule. I say the rule is still bad and that rules are supposed to support the bad GMs too. Indeed, bad GMs need them a lot more than good ones do.

In this one Traveller game I joined, my character - a catgirl type with Berserk (9) - was killed by one of the mooks she was fighting standing behind her while her attention was on the mooks' leader and putting a bullet in the back of her head at what amounted to point-blank range. Mafia-style execution (though the GM emphatically denies this latter part).

After the session, one of the other players, whose character was also injured in the session, quipped the following:

"They killed our catgirl! This must not go unanswered!" :)

It was a first-level AD&D game, and the players were feeling unpretentious. Our "magician" was a fraud, we had three or four thieves, and the laconic dwarf was far more interested in promoting his family's wines and spirits business than fighting.

So going down a dungeon didn't seem like the thing to do. I think we were trying to do some kind of confidence trick, but most of the PCs were getting confused. In any case, we were having a meeting with a couple of merchants, and when people finished their drinks, the dwarf started pouring new ones from the bottles filling his pack. People liked them, and more were poured, and drunk. After a while, one of the merchants noticed the dwarf wasn't saying anything:

"And, err, who's this?"

"Oh, he's an enterprising local poisoner" said one of the thieves, and things went rapidly downhill.

From the awesome Darths&Droids webcomic:

"If the real world had a similar skill distribution to your average game world, then half the people you meet on the street would be able to climb a sheer wall to get to the roof of a three storey building, sneak past a sleeping guard dog without waking it, and crack a safe within 30 seconds."
