Re: GTISW shipbuilder released
Ah. Open Office is almost certainly the cause of your spinner problem.
Excel sometimes has a problem with comment boxes, such that they get resized. The only time they get relocated is if you're trying to edit them, and that shouldn't be needed unless you're making changes to the sheet itself. No idea who I have to brain with my Great Maul of Assbeating to get these errors to stop happening, but I am addicted to using the things for commenting cells that aren't blindingly obvious what's supposed to go there, so I guess I'm in a quandry. (So far, the problem hasn't occurred in Excel2003, so maybe they fixed it?) You shouldn't need to be typing in very large numbers in cells with spinners; they're all capable of displaying 4 digits, and only in extreme cases should you even need that many. Could this be another Open Office problem? As to sheet organization, I originally intended to have everything accessible by logical arrangement. Start in the upperleft corner with design, with the tally sheet to the right so you could keep track, and then scroll down more to get to the finished product. Unfortunately, the need for different column widths between design and finished product prevented this nicety, so I put the finished sheet to the right, but that caused other problems, because some rows are taller than others in the design section. I had to settle for what you see as the closest thing to a good solution. Sure, putting the finished sheet on a different tab would've been a good thought, but then you wouldn't be able to go back later and tweak your designs without having to reenter everything. I tried putting in a few hyperlinks to make going between sections easier for those without dual-scroll mouses, but the hyperlinks were completely static and sent you back to the original tab, not the tab you were working on. |
Re: GTISW shipbuilder released
Many thanks for your shipbuilder. I just downloaded it and it looks very good. ASAP I will create my first ships and try it out. Great work, man. /thumbs up. :)

Re: GTISW shipbuilder released
Thanks! Please feel free to post your designs so everyone can enjoy them. In a new thread. If you want. If you're not too embarrassed. Or too busy eating your hand. Or whatever that is you're doing in that avatar pic.

Re: GTISW shipbuilder released
OK, my friends and I are getting ready to run a GT:ISW campaign. Half of the group has played previous version of Traveller, both Original and GURPS. Thanks for the spreadsheet! If we find any goofs, we'll let you know. (Fair warning, we're all database developers and database administrators, so we troubleshoot software all the time.) First off, I was trying to build everyone's favorite 200-ton Trader, and I've selected a standard bridge. It is setting the Command Crew to 5, and the book calls for three. It looks like the standard bridge sets this value to 5, regardless of ship size. What am I missing?
Again, thanks for all the hard work! |
Re: GTISW shipbuilder released
Glad you have found it useful!
The answer to your question lies in that while the rules in the book were developed and playtested, they changed. Apparently there were enough changes that not all of them were completely tracked, and each "standard design" you see in the book was not always completely updated to reflect the rules changes. If you observe carefully, you may notice similar bugs in some of the ship sheets I provided. I made a number of ships to help find bugs in my code, and when I found one, I would update the main blank page and usually the designs, but I didn't ALWAYS update the other designs, and so some of them may contain bugs. This is why I put in a warning to not copy those designs as the basis for a new ship, but to always make your copies of the blank sheet, because that sheet has the fewest errors - hopefully none. Of course, as Dalton pointed out, my algorithms were not all the most efficient possible, but they did the job. If you have suggestions for improvements, I welcome the input. |
Re: GTISW shipbuilder released
I have posted the file to my MSN account; please read the UPDATE in the first post in this thread for details, and let me know if you have any problems.
