A question about Perspectives and mass combat

Pyramid 3/84 offers rules on converting characters to mass combat stats and I want to use it for my campaign to also design new generic units for various factions in the game world. The issue is that the values are all far too high when dealing with squads of generics.

I built a fairly weak TL3 group of spearmen, individually they costed 2k to raise and provided 2 troop strength (After applying the "Gritty" 0.1x mod to TS which I guessed was probably the intention with the generic units in mass combat). When you get a squad of 10 of them though, that becomes 20k and 20 TS, That's half the raise cost and 10 times the TS of the Mass combat's version of light infantry!

Is there something I'm missing in this? Most people I can find talking about Pyramid 3/84's rules in this case are praising them for being great. I just want to know before I start working on things like artillery and vehicles because I can't really figure out how that should work (What with you sometimes needing multiple people to operate one weapon)

Re: A question about Perspectives and mass combat

As the author that article I can tell you that it is meant for hero units, and not for creating new normal units. It says this in the preamble. It also states that if you do use it for the latter it will not be exactly the same as Mass Combat. This is because we just don't know what the effectiveness of spearman vs. a rifle squad is or how the battlefield conditions of an area would affect that. Most of the values in Mass Combat were not derived in any system or formula as far as I know (and I was in the playtest), but done rather by feel.
