How does encumbrance work for a Dwarf-Human hybrid?
 
Shorty, Half-dwarf, age 20
ST 9, DX 12, IQ 11, MA 10
Talents include: Axe/Mace Expertise, Naturalist, Shield Expertise, Woodsman
Language: Common
Weapon: very fine hatchet (1d+3)
Attacks and Damage: Punch (1d-3)
Armor: small shield stops 2 hits, -2 to be hit with hatchet and shield in hand

What's Shorty's encumbrance limits?

I would argue halfway between times 1 and times 2 is times sqrt(2), so 40% greater than a human's would be.

What sort of "halfway" do you have in mind here?

I can understand that perhaps 150% isn't the right answer, but I'm not quite seeing how sqrt(2) is coming into it.

The info in the Half-Breeds section says the result is midway between the two. So for Shorty, 150% human normal.

If you want to add some variance, use one of the tricks from a lot of the d20 games and let the player pick which breed the character favors. Whether this moves the result to 100% of one of the parents or maybe 75% toward the favored might keep all 1/2 breeds from being exact copies.

Only allow the sqrt(2) thing if Shorty takes the Mathematician talent. Otherwise he has no clue how to calculate how much he can carry and has to leave everything at home.
