Re: GURPS Forum Abbreviations: help the newbies?
"Yes, they are- GURPS Traveller: Humaniti p.30. FYI in another thread I brought up the fact that when they were first mentioned, I think in Supplement 3:The Spinward Marches , the implication was that their high TL was due to their own merits. Now it seems to have become widely held as canon that the high TL is due to pockets of sparse, aging ancient artifacts. I don't know that I like that, I always thought of the Darrians as the Vulcans of Traveller, one of my first PCs was a Darrian character, Solanada, who, admittedly, was kind of a Spock clone (hey, in my defense I was 12 when I created him, and I was smitten with Mr Spock). IMTU they held rationality and reason above emotion, and had disciplines by which the mind could be strengthened and emotion purged, like the Vulcans. I'm thinking of bringing Solanada back in my current Kinunir/Twilight's Peak/RSG trilogy campaign as an NPC that gives technical/scientific advice to the PCs. Nothing wrong with a cliche in a game- a cliche can be a GMs best friend. What'd ya'll think?"

We can make our own for the forum. My proposals so far: IW: Infinite Worlds ISW: InterStellar Wars F: Fantasy BS: Banestorm S: Space (as per 3e) SU: Supers (as per 3e) P: Powers (needs a one-letter acronym due to being used frequently). TPI: Traveller Psionic Institutes Bi and Bii: Basic Set books when needing the distinction but ignorant of the page number. MA: you know it. |

Not too bad an idea, but for something that unofficial, we should open a new thread.

Re: GURPS Forum Abbreviations: help the newbies?
I'm going to have a gripe about abbreviations for ammunition types in Ultra-Tech, some of which aren't immediately obvious and only yield up their secrets on a close reading of the text. CL and CLP were particularly frustrating until I spotted a ref to "caseless long rifle" rounds at the end of the conventional guns section (p136), as they weren't explained where they were introduced and aren't indexed.
So far I've figured out- CL- caseless long CLP- caseless long pistol CLR- caseless long rifle PC- plastic-cased (for shotgun-style ammo) PLB- pre-loaded barrel G- grenade, I presume, although I'm not sure why the Portable Rail Gun (p141/142) is listed as 10mmG when the text says it fires slugs N- needler (that was an easy one) T- tangler (likewise) Abbreviations for gun names are more explicitly stated, so I won't go into them, but I had some 30 minutes frustration trying to scan the text, weapons tables, index, Basic Set, etc, for a summary of these ammo types. |
Re: GURPS Forum Abbreviations: help the newbies?
Thanks for posting those on the front page, Molokh.
As I've had a reply from the esteemed David Pulver-dono graciously correcting an erratum, could you change one line in the entry? Where it says Quote:
G- grenade (note that Portable Rail Gun (p141/142, and the ammunition table p143) is listed incorrectly as 10mmG, where it should be just 10mm). Thanks and onya. |

Re: GURPS Forum Abbreviations: help the newbies?
According to this page, Bio-Tech has two official abbreviations, BIO and BT; however, BT is also Blood Types (a book for Gurps 3rd ed.). So my guess is Bio-Tech used BIO for 1st edition (for GURPS 3rd ed.) , and BT for 2nd edition (for GURPS 4th ed.).
Would someone connected to SJGames either confirm or deny this? |
Re: GURPS Forum Abbreviations: help the newbies?
Note that for 4th Edition the only official abbreviation is the B for Basic. All other references in 4E books use the full name. This is for clarity (is BT Biotech or Blood Types?) and ease of use. In 3E some of the later abbreviations were very non-intuitive while others fit several books equally well. The end result was people had to look up the abbreviation to see which book it referred to. Which defeats the purpose of using abbreviations.
That said, I'd go with BIO for Bio-Tech. JeffM |

P.S. Okay, that was snarky. I'm just angry tonight: since my last post I was busy reinstalling my OS. My WinXP refesed to boot for some reason (mid-boot) but nooo, they don't have a step-by-step confirmation in XP like they had in older versions. Once I reinstalled XP, it screwed up the MBR and now GRUB (and thus GNU/Linux) fails to load. So now I'm working on a not-quite finished installation of a window with all that implies. So much for playing C&C today . . . I'll add ER. |

These aren't -abbreviations- (instead, they're general terms) but they need to be addressed:
Realistic: Technical terminology, as described in the Campaigns book. Cinematic: Ditto. Seriously, given the degree of communication failure that these words can cause, I'd rather not have to scare-quote them every time I use them. |

A few from a survivalist forum I'm on which could be useful as generic gaming ones: SHTF: Organic fertilizer strikes the rotary ventilation device (Things are bad, but localized) EOTWAWKI: End Of The World As We Know It (Things are bad everywhere) BOB: Bug Out Bag (Gear & chow for the three days it'll take for help to arrive after the SHTF.) BOL: Bug Out Location (Where you bug out to) BOV: Bug Out Vehicle (What you bug out in) BOx: Bug Out (Noun), where the noun is something related to getting out of dodge when things go bad. Has been known to get rather silly with things like BOAT for "Bug Out Altoid Tin" for a homemade mini survival kit. BUG: Back-Up Gun FAK: First Aid Kit INCH Bag: I'm Never Coming Home Bag (For when it's the EOTWAWKI, and help won't be coming in three days...) |

Re: GURPS Forum Abbreviations: help the newbies?
On Metafilter, this one comes up a lot:
tl;dr (too long; didn't read) Has that abbreviation appeared in these forums yet? Maybe it has in the general discussion section. Two that came up during the playtest for GURPS Horror, Fourth Edition: GH4e KH (Ken Hite) The former is longer than "GH" or "H," but it's easier to decipher. The latter isn't really necessary, but it signifies Ken's status among GURPS fans. ---Scott |

Re: GURPS Forum Abbreviations: help the newbies?
I thought "TL,DR" meant "Too long, didn't read" and was typically posted to snarkily complain about someone else's wall of text. However lately I'm seeing it more and more outside of that context like here. What is that supposed to mean?
