New Update Looks Nice

Fixes some of the annoying lighting issues. Haven't had a chance to play enough to develop an opinion on the game play features.

Glad to see that console players can now enjoy OGRE. Thirty six years since the Commodore 64 version. Long wait, but they'll love it.

I played a couple games on my PC. Good upgrade. Didn't pay much attention to the visuals, but the AI will now fight instead of letting me herd it like sheep. Lost, but at least it tried.

Except for the infantry. The infantry didn't want to come adjacent to the Ogre for some reason.

Would you want to? ;-)

Not personally, no. But there's no sense spending the money to equip them if they're not fighting.

My headcanon assumes infantry in Ogre are drugged like the Terran troops in The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress:

they were loaded with energizers, don’t-worries, and fear inhibitors that would make mouse spit at cat, and turned loose. They fought professionally and quite fearlessly—died.

More seriously, can you explain what you are seeing in more detail?

Are you saying you are playing with the AI controlling the defense instead of the Ogre and the INF are not being brought into the fight?

Also, I'm assuming you are talking the Steam version, correct? I'll want to look at this myself, so as much detail as you can give me (OS, platform, scenario, etc), the better off we'll be to understand what's happening.

Re: New Update Looks Nice

Huh. AI Ogre is nicely aggressive, but will go around infantry instead of overrunning if it has the option.

When I played the Ogre (PC, Steam) the AI infantry would leave an empty hex between themselves and the Ogre. Even if I drove into a group of INF they'd back up instead of staying to shoot. INF two hexes away would move in one. Makes me want to take a stripe off some squad leaders. This happened in Mk III Attack and Mk V attack.

Ahh, ok. I think I know what might be going on there. In discussions I had with AD about ramming, the AI was ramming with a complete disregard for treads; almost going out of its way to ram things. I had suggested the Ogre didn't need to ram everything all the time if there was an option to go around to avoid unnecessary tread loss. That probably got carried over to INF, which obviously is silly to avoid a free squish. I'll be sure to pass that along.

It's interesting I haven't seen that myself while testing; my INF is getting squished as expected, but that may be because there's usually no free space to go around.

Is there a particular scenario and setup where you are seeing this?

I'll definitely take a look at this and see if I can reproduce it. INF are pretty ineffective if they stay too far away to attack...

The INF weirdness is definitely reproducible; I'll pass it along.

Thanks for reporting it.

Happy to help!

The updated version is still more fun to play than the previous one.

Re: New Update Looks Nice

Since this has turned into the bug report thread . . .

I played another game of Mk III attack, me as Ogre, PC/Steam. This time my goal was "find how bad I have to play to let the AI win."

Wound up with Ogre immobilized and nothing left but the CP. Since that doesn't fulfill any of the listed victory conditions, the game continued until I quit.

INF will approach an immobilized Ogre.

If all the range 2 hexes are filled, HVY/GEVs will stay at range 3 rather than move into a range 1 hex to shoot.

I'm counting it as a Pyrrhic victory for the AI as the CP survived.

Let me know if I should switch to emailing Auroch instead of listing stuff here.

As you can tell by the length of time between your post and my reply, emailing Auroch Digital directly is going to be more timely. Feel free to CC ogre@sjgames.com as well if you do, that way I'll be aware of it, too.

Thanks again for finding more things and reporting them; I can't find them all myself.
