Julian's hand is still glowing. He's wearing a rug around his waste.

He unbars the grate and rushes out. He sees two more statues join the first as he looks back, just before he heads outside.

Its a little cold outside, but the air is still, and the sky full of stars: there doesn't seem to be more than thin wisps of clouds.

Well, I guess there's little to do now but head towards the village at the foot of the hill.

Julian heads down the hill. The ground is dry. bone dry. It has fences around fields, but nothing but occasional tuffs of sparse grass clumps grow.

The homes are equally dry and barren. nothing is left in them: just houses made of dried mud. At least they have roofs. The village is set up as a ring, all around a central field.

He spots a tower rising up from one part of the village. And a couple of wells.

Well, I guess it is the desert.

Maybe it wasn't always this dry? Maybe the climate changed and they picked up stakes and moved...

I look down the wells. Is there any water? Then I'll head over to the tower. Is there a way in?

What does the house on the hill look like from the outside? If this village is abandoned, why are they still here?

you think you see the reflective surface of water way down there, you're not sure how far. There is no way to retrieve it, just a marked and covered hole in the ground.

Yes, The tower door can be barred, but currently isn't. The tower seems to consist just of stairs and a platform at the top. From the top of the tower, Julian gets a good view of all the area around. Its still pretty dark. but maybe that's a caravan over there to the west, and maybe that's the silhouette of a city to the north east.

It looks like a little hut built into the hill.

Strange how something so vast and complicated is so small from the outside.

Well, I guess the water didn't run out and the village didn't break up after that.

Doesn't look like there's anything around here worth sticking around for, except perhaps for an angry stone statue looking for a rug. I guess north east towards the city it is.

So he'll set out through the desert in the middle of the night?

Does Julian have any navigation skills? Is he taking anything besides the rug?

No, but the city seems to be in sight from the tower so it can't be that far away.

Well, it is a desert. It'd probably be worse trying to cross during the day when it's very hot out.

There doesn't seem to be anything of note in the village.

Julian sets off through the sand, crossing through rough terrain (Erosion in deserts tends to make the land rougher, not smoother) Its hard to stay going strait towards the city: the way the land curves and winds seems to try and through him off course.

As the sun is coming up, he notices something strange: a rain storm, ahead of him and to the left. Its small and isolated, but seems to be dropping a lot of rain. He can feel something reaching across the sky, pulling in water.

Well, it is water in the desert... I'll head towards the storm, and try to collect water in my hands water to drink and to soak the rug. That should keep the rug cool if I need it for shade in the sun.
