Decks of Destiny, anyone?
I have seen some rumblings that there are actually people out there who have received Decks of Destiny. Anyone here who has gotten it an would like to share some impressions, photos, etc.?

Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
FedEx says that mine will arrive tomorrow. I shall post some photos when it does.

Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
I am most anxious to see what y’all think of this one. I’m biased, but I think it is going to be amazing!

Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
I'm super looking forward to it! I can't imagine that I won't be stoked - it is filled with tons of stuff that you will use actively at the table, which is the only sort of rpg product I like. It's crazy how much the hobby has become about 200 page books that you can't possibly use during play! Give me goofy maps and decks of cards every time.

Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
The metal dice are fantastic! Just can't see using them in game play.

Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
Who shall be the first to upload a video playthrough?
Nudge me about it and I'll add it to the playlist. |
Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
Got mine yesterday. Opened it this morning and shared a photo on twitter. It is a lot of stuff - a lot - makes me a little sad that I am not fifteen and it is not 1978.
That young me would have been putting every single bit of that box to use, right now! 56 year old me is still trying to come up with the courage to go to the FLGS to try and meet new people to play with - otherwise this big box will end up in the basement right beside the "I want it all" box I have still not put into use. |
Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
Get yourself out there, dude! I'm playing pretty regularly using my Legacy Edition boxed (plus the bits and bobs that came out more recently), using Skype to connect to members of my old childhood gaming group. We'll jump on for an hour or two most weekends. It isn't the same thing as the 10 hour marathon sessions from when we were all kids, but it is a billion % better than nothing. And very easy.

The metal dice in the "all the newness" are heavy...like 1d6-2 when thrown by a halfling heavy! Awesome.

Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
You veteran players are always welcome to use Decks of Destiny in online play-by-post games on the TFT Discord server. There are currently 2 campaigns running at the time and always room for more. (invitation link is in my signature file.)

Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
If you want to encourage a group of new people at a meet-and-greet style gaming setting (like a store with tables or a bar that does board games), I highly recommend you use one of the more interesting looking roll out rubber battle mats (like, hexagonal arena or octopus lair), and draw people in for a scenario that really shows off the fun that comes from diverse, crazy encounters. I have never seen someone walk away without a smile from something involving a couple of crazily mixed-and-matched teams, like a fighter, a wizard and a giant vs. a pair of goblins, a 4 hex dragon and a big slime. Weird victory conditions are also another way to engage new players.

Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
Doh! Yeah, when I din't have an e-mail yet I should have realized they just haven't gotten to me yet. OTH I live about an hour from Austin so mine will come pretty quick. It's kind of a race though because I leave for Germany in a week and will be over there for 3 months.

Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
I got a notification of an email which had something about a shipping notice in the title.
Opened my inbox, opened the mail, expecting it to tell me that DOD was on the way and . . . . . . it was from a guy with DHL Nigeria telling me a gift card for $5,000,000 had been held up in customs and could I please send a fee to hurry it a long. |
Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
Well hurry up and write back to him; a $5,000,000 gift card doesn't come along every day!

Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
Got mine a couple of days ago. I've been running random melee combats for my own entertainment at home, but I'm trying to get a handle on the system overall so that I can run it at conventions (starting with Emerald City Comicon in a month or so).

Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
My package will be arriving today. I'm really looking forward to unboxing it!
|
Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
Yay! DOD should be here on Monday.

Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
Phil,
Did the box for the labyrinth tile get printed reversed? The Megahex symbol seems to be on the bottom given the way it opens. |

Phil,
I was asking about the little box that the labyrinth tiles are stored in. The symbol for the box is on the bottom rather than the top when assembled. |

I thought you meant the megahex box. |
Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
Thanks Phil. Enjoy your weekend.

Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
hcobb, I assumed the labyrinth hexes were at "labyrinth scale" - meaning each hex on the map represents a megahex instead of just a single hex. Not true? Or you are just choosing to keep it smaller?
By the way, those are some fiercely adorable miniatures you've got there! |
Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
The instructions hex says "These hexes show rooms and tunnels that use the shapes of the megahexes in the Legacy Edition"
So for example hex 58 shows (in purple lines) how to place a 2*2 Megahex, a three Megahex triangle, a 1*2 Megahex, a 1*3 Megahex, and a single Megahex tiles together to make a huge room. There are then four partial Megahexes along the sides that hook into adjacent cards. I just happened to draw one of the three cards that showed a narrow tunnel and adapted this to work with the entry stairs. If I had been a little more serious about GMing I would have ruled that this initial narrow tunnel had a downward slope towards the dungeon proper. Living next to a minifigs second hand shop has its own distractions. I'm tempted to write a scenario just to use the sleigh pulled by dire wolves, but I only have two goblin figures and those are the two goblins Sir Irving brought home for Sandy to play with, or so she thinks. |
Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
My set just rolled in today, and I already did some play testing using the new materials integrated into my regular weekly group. It is all overwhelming - perhaps more (or at least more unexpectedly) than the Legacy Edition boxed set. There are just so many different things in there, and quite a few of them were not even on my radar, despite the fact that I thought I was following the campaign pretty carefully.
I am preparing a full review of DoD but want to make sure I've really seen it all and used a fair bit at the table before I post, so it will take a few days. Till then, another amazing feat from the team at SJG!!! |
Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
Not even a shipping notice yet. *pathetic whimper*

It's a big, heavy box of stuff and a lot to process. There are three in the warehouse handling a hefty workload. Please be patient. |
Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
Mine was packed perfectly. Actually, I suspect there is an item or two in there I never added in backer kit...
|
Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
Mine arrived today. What a beast! Gearing up for a barrage of public games in at least one venue, maybe two public games and this is definitely a great addition to The Fantasy Trip. Who knew a game that you could buy in the 80's for $5 through the Johnson-Smith catalog would turn into this?
|
Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
Mine arrived yesterday!
I assembled the little boxes and will be figuring which decks go in which boxes today. |
Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
The tiny grey box gets the Labyrinth Hex cards; the next largest (I'm color blind so don't have a good guess there...) gets the treasure and rumor cards; next biggest gets the fighter cards, placed in long-side down, and the biggest one gets the wizard and monster cards, lying flat.
Kind of a bummer the big wizard and monster cards don't stand on edge like in the other boxes, but I can see why they didn't do this as the cards are taller than the DoD box, so you wouldn't be able to easily store them all together. But when I use them I just open the box, tip out the whole set, and then stand them on edge back in the box so I can easily leaf through them, like an old card catalogue. Also, be sure you make some section dividers, cut from heavy card stock paper or something, as you will have multiple sets of different cards in three of the four boxes. |
Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
Did anyone else get a somewhat defective Labyrinth journal? Mine is bound upside down and backwards
|
Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
I got mine on Thursday. No shipping notice that I ever saw but it's here :) I got some extra stuff, one of which was the Melee playmat After seeing that I am seriously regretting not getting the Wizard one as well. The arena maps are nice and all that but I really wish I had gotten the Wizard playmat as I think I would get significantly more use out of that. Maybe it will become available again.

What are the red (Melee) and purple (Wizard) tuck boxes for?
|
Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
If you received defective product in your Kickstarter rewards, please email kickstart@sjgames.com with a description of the problem (pictures will help a lot!).
Posting here does not notify the people who are in a position to fix your problem. |

Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
I've found the four fold-up boxes, plus the flat MH boxes, to be totally indispensable to organizing my stuff. The two tuck boxes I basically used to hold the remaining bits and bobs that didn't obviously go anywhere else. E.g., I'm currently keeping my paper fighter and wizard cards (i.e., from the pads) in there. I might eventually interleaf them with the erasable cards, but am thinking of laminating them or gluing them to cardstock first.

Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
I hope to add a few tuckboxes to my Hexagram #4 order.
And a couple of player packs? Anyway . . . I'm currently having fun reading through the Treasures. |
Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
Can we be hope to see DoD (with or without stretch goals) on W23 at some point if we missed the kickstarter?

Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
I got mine overnight, oddly enough. I live in Austin. Still, it usually takes two days. I wasn't even looking for it. I was passing the door and noticed an odor (smelled like aftershave), so I opened the door to see what was up. Then I saw the package. So I was alerted to a package by some delivery driver's aftershave. :D
In related news, I'm amazed at how heavy it is. Some of the weight is the seven metal dice. I put them in the Illuminati dice bag. Now I have a bag of huge metal dice and an improvised cosh, should I need one. ;) It's beautiful. Well done, SJG. :) |
Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
Mine just arrived in NW England so hopefully people in the UK will get theirs shortly.
|
Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
I'm in the UK too and happily received my DoD today (just in time for social distancing...)
To Phil Reed and SJG: I've been very happy with the gameshop/agent that SJG are using to handle their UK orders. Good communication and response to a query i had with Legacy Edition |
Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
Lovely to see more people getting to dig into this one! I'm scheduled to play by Skype a bit later today...
|
Re: Decks of Destiny, anyone?
Mine has arrived in the U.K.! Amazing amount of stuff in that big crate which I only had a chance to go through yesterday. I wish now I'd opted for more players packs as I only got 2; the little player journals are very nice. Will these be available again?
