How big is a hex?
I couldn't find this in a previous post so I'll ask here. How big are hexes supposed to be. I get the sense from ITL that a hex is only a yard across, but that seems too small considering:
1. A wolf, a large bear and a dead body typically take up one hex. A horse (8 feet long) takes up two hexes. 2. Hand to hand (i.e., unarmed or knives) happens in one hex. 3. It seems it would be difficult for fighters with spears, swords, etc to fight only 3 feet away from each other. Whether with each other or side by side. So hexes would seem to be more like 4-6 feet. Am I missing something? |

4 feet (RAW)

Re: How big is a hex?
ITL p 55, if you want a reference. There's a chart with hex sizes for many different scales (combat. labyrinth maps, cities, duchies, etc).

Re: How big is a hex?
The problem with ITL 55 is that it treats the Megahex as being 3.33 as long as the underlying hex when it is actually only 2.5 times as long. This 33 percent error is compounded at every step up.

I make the center-to-center distance between two adjacent megahexes to be about 10.6 feet (two 4-foot hexes over, plus one more up at an angle), which is about 2.65 times as much as a hex. |
Re: How big is a hex?
I have a detailed table showing the error on page ITL 55 here:

It is, incidentally, weird that a barony is larger than a county. Should we care about larger hexes then we have:

Re: How big is a hex?
Area increases by 7, but you're not on a 45 degree angle, so it's not sqrt(7) distance. (Note that the coordinate system rotates on each step.)

Re: How big is a hex?
Did anyone notice that the Pocket Box maps are not 1" hexes? They're 15/16" hexes ... a wee compromise to still fit everything onto the sheet.

Re: How big is a hex?
Geometry is purty.
5 Layers of Hexes. So this could be Combat at the smallest and City at the largest, or City at the smallest and Province at the largest. Or any other five consecutive layers of zoom. |
Re: How big is a hex?
Checking that image pixel by pixel it does show that sqrt(7) takes over at the larger scales as Bofinger correctly indicates. Added the Earldom and flipped the titles also.
