High IQ Talents for Low IQ Characters

Variant rule inspired by the recent 'Woodsman' thread on the main TFT forum.

http://forums.sjgames.com/showthread.php?t=165987

At the GM's discretion, the required IQ for certain Talents can be lowered or eliminated during character creation in exchange for doubling or tripling the 'cost' in IQ points. For example, an IQ 8 hobgoblin survivalist could be allowed to spend 4 points to acquire Naturalist and 2 points for Woodsman (or maybe 3 points w/o the Naturalist prerequisite).

Needs some work, obviously, but it seems like a fair tradeoff.

I like more primitive versions of existing talents.

There are lots of ways to do this, including having a character class for it:
  • A sorceror is like a wizard, except:
    • spells cost 2 IQ each
    • he can have one spell 2 points above his IQ, and 2 spells 1 point above his IQ.
  • A tribesman is like a hero, except:
    • He can have some talents above his IQ
    • Some penalty of other to compensate

I like it. It shows the dedication and time used to hone a skill. Maybe there should be a tripling if the IQ for the skill is IQ+4 or so.

I would add 1 to the multiplier for every single point of IQ by which the talent exceeds their own, +1. So if you're IQ 8, IQ 9 is double cost, 10 is triple, 11 quadruple, etc. I think this is fair, mainly because I see the current system as fair. So any comfortable heuristic, no matter how crude or harsh, seems acceptable, because it only makes things easier than they are now. Plus, I wouldn't ever want to see an IQ 8 weapon master of any sort.

Why is there an IQ requirement for Area Knowledge?

Shouldn't even household cats have some form of this?

Also can we shut down whatever store it is that sells the spears to the Neanderthals? At their IQ level they aren't able to make any spears for themselves.

No, clearly they have whatever they need to make and use what they make and use.

If you need the details you can make something up, and/or get GURPS Ice Age.
