Decks of Destiny - Late April

1 Attachment(s)
At FnordCon over the weekend, Steve gave everyone an overview of the upcoming Decks of Destiny for The Fantasy Trip. What is it? Cards. Lots of cards. Cards of wizards, fighters, creatures, treasures, and more. And new megahexes, because we know you always need more terrain for your labyrinth adventures.

. . . and even more cool stuff. I just saw the sketches for two new and awesome things in my email. The entire project is coming together nicely.

For those who are wondering, the reward levels range from lowish ($15ish or so) and up. (Way up if you want to get the new stuff as well as everything we've produced for the game since last summer.) Is there an "I Want All the New Stuff"-like pledge? Absolutely. $120ish or so for those of you who are planning ahead and want all the new. (NOTE: Numbers are still being tweaked, but we know some of you wanted a rough idea so you could start preparing your bank/supplier/gaming patron.)

We haven't finalized the exact date for the Kickstarter campaign. Late this month looks likely.

To receive email notification when the project launches, please follow the Warehouse 23 account on Kickstarter:

I am really looking forward to this one! Hopefully I’ll be able to open my ‘I Want It All!’ Box before this Kickstarter is over.

The Master Physicker card would turn an IQ 8 grunt into a 38 attribute character?

Really looking forward to this! I have high hopes that it will assist me in solitaire play outside of the microquests like Death Test and Death Test 2. Should be fun.

Good, I've already been asked by a few people where they could get their hands on a copy of ITL, it'd be nice if that was offered as a pdf and physical copy add-on.

We are doing a terrible job of promoting this. (To which _I_ am the one doing a terrible job.)

If they want to preorder the hardcover of In the Labyrinth, it is a part of the Hexagram preorders that close very soon:

Phil, I know there is now a logistical division between SJG and W23 on Kickstarter, but the TFT KS was brought out before this. So just for the record, will we ever be able to direct potential players to a link where they can directly purchase TFT Legacy Edition products such as Melee, Wizard, the M/W Pocketbox, ITL hard or softcover, and the full TFT box set or are they only available by asking a local game shop to order it?

Warehouse 23 will have distribution titles available, yes. I suspect we'll see the Legacy Edition listed for sale on the site next week.

Many thanks! With all the adventures, cards, and other supplemental material, I keep wondering this one thing: how much of this is stuff that Steve has been wanting to bring to the game for over 30 years? Is there a huge "I wanted to do this, and this, and this..." list somewhere (either a physical or mental one)? I really get this vibe looking at the inside of the LE box lid.

BTW, super kudos on being the type of folks who squeeze "one more thing" in rather than shortcut to save costs. Y'all could have easily had a blank interior box lid and nobody would have missed it. I'm very glad you did not.

Thanks! If you liked the drop table printed on the lid of the Legacy Edition box, I think you'll enjoy the new drop table that was created for the inside lid of the Decks of Destiny box.

Is it going to be the same size? Legacy is a pretty big box. Two of them would be on the limit of keeping. In fact, I was reluctant to purchase a legacy box for my daughter because she is moving. Waiting for the Bag of Bags backerkit to go so I can purchase the melee/wizard box for her.

Planned at the same height and width. The depth will depend on stretch goals.

Idea for an add-on... I would love to get some 3-hex, 4-hex, 7-hex, etc. plastic bases for my larger Cardboard Heroes, paper minis and other figure 'pawns'.

That would not work for an add-on. The project would cost thousands, and add-ons have a giant question mark around them: How many do we really need?

If anything, that idea would work best as a completely separate project.

Re: Decks of Destiny - Late April

I understand why some folks are drawn toward cardboard heroes as mini's for TFT, but I'm not interested in this and would rather see the game line 'double down' on its core components (the new line of tiles and chits) in order to get the most out of them.

Thanks Phil. I assumed as much but figured I would still put it out there. I can always re-purpose the round bases I have from Pathfinder Pawns, but it would be nice to have bases that match the odd hex-based shapes for larger figures.

And I realize I may be in the minority, but I prefer stand-up minis to flat tokens or 'chits'. More aesthetic to me I suppose.

Re: Decks of Destiny - Late April

Like Lars, I fully understand why a lot of folks love the miniatures (cardboard or otherwise), but if asked for an opinion, I would go with "stick to counters and Megahexes, please" simply because they are affordable, work extremely well, and are relatively easy to expand in terms of options.

Again, not a challenge to other preferences; just my personal one! ;-)

Ben and I reviewed all of the components yesterday and continue to prepare the Kickstarter page for launch.

Gabby and I looked over the rough layout for a new book.

Progress on multiple fronts!

Have access to a 3D printer? There are designs for all kinds of stuff (figures, terrain, etc), including bases for cardboard figures. Like Matt Riggsby's.

(I don't see 7-hex bases, but if you have the design file, it should be easy enough to extend, at least for people into that process.)

Variety of bases here as well, including 7-hex bases.

I have to tweak them a bit - the bases for the Paizo pawns are a little loose (I based my bases on an existing pawn base, which was too loose). A piece of tape on the bottom of the pawn makes them snug.

I also have a 14-hex flat base, but I haven't uploaded it to Thingiverse yet.

Yeah the one big thing I think TFT is missing as an old school fantasy game is a dedicated monsters book.

I definitely want a reference that's more than a deck of cards (PDF is perfect for me these days - it's searchable). I would very much appreciate counters to match the monsters.

Is it too late to suggest that Master Physicker get split out into smaller bits?

Draw two cards and if they're both Physicker then you get Master.

This would allow for Alertness plus Physicker and lots of other combos.

Hurray! I'm delighted to see this approach in your follow up to last year's kickstarter. Very wise to focus on the usable 'gear' of the game, as opposed to the rules expansions many games turn to as their 'second album'.

Re: Decks of Destiny - Late April

The Decks of Destiny box set includes various packs of cards/accessories. After our experience with the Legacy Edition last year, we've made arrangements to offer many of these packs as separate add-on items. This way you can grab extras of the components that you expect to use the most.

* Player's Pack - unaffected by project stretch goals. Includes the option cards, two dry erase character cards, a dry erase marker, and a 16-page character journal.

* Rumors & Treasures - a buncha cards and two journals. Some of the stretch goals add more cards and pages to the journals.

* Adversaries - a whole lotta cards! Some of the stretch goals add more cards.

* Labyrinths - 62 cards and a journal to record your adventures (or to plan adventures!).

* megahexes - six new sheets of megahex tiles. Some stretch goals add more sheets. These are illustrated on one side and blank on the other.

And there are more accessories packed inside the larger I Want All The Newness reward level, including at least one new playmat. And after response to the two color choices, we're going to make both color options available: If you select this reward level, you'll choose one of the two color designs in BackerKit. (Of course, both will be add-ons for those of you who want more playmats.)

We're still planning to launch the project before the end of this month. (But not on the weekend. And likely not on Tuesday, since we have a distributor show to fly out to on that day.)

We hope to see many of you join us when the Kickstarter campaign goes live!

Say, Phil, I saw your "props" over on the Facebook page. And I made a suggestion that you guys consider offering such things as stretch goals in future TFT Kickstarters... Props are an "undiscovered country" for some reason in Fantasy RPGs (though they are widely used in games like Call of Cthulhu -- to the point where sculptors make props such as busts or "keys" or other tangible things for use in that game), despite the fact that EGG tried to do that sort of thing in products like Tomb of Horrors and Expedition to the Barrier Peaks. I'm hoping you all will sit down and discuss that as a possibility -- things like your Wanted Posters (or the menus you mentioned) or old tattered maps or cryptic clues done up on parchment would be a very nice add-on to many adventures and rumor compilations!

And that's fine for you. But there are other people who lack the time, materials, equipment and possibly the patience and skill to do their own props, and something like that would be a huge benefit for them.

Props can be a lot of fun, but they definitely take some effort to do right. The Illuminati Coins we produced -- http://www.warehouse23.com/products/illuminati-coins -- turned out great. I'd like to take a stab at coins for The Fantasy Trip.

Very impressed! You all are doing an excellent job of continuing to bring people in to your games by providing multiple opportunities to purchase Kickstarter games. If someone misses a campaign then they can catch up. Brilliant! This looks like another winner and very reasonably priced for all that is going in to this set.

Thank you! We're trying to keep the new projects flowing while still leaving a way for those who missed out to join in. Our hope is that we can unlock a lot of stretch goals and jam even more into the set; we'll know soon just how much interest there is for more support for The Fantasy Trip!

TFT brought me back in to the fold. I looked at TFT and loved it. Took another look at Dungeon Fantasy RPG and GURPS. These are different games but they share the same designer. You all appear to be using Kickstarter to build your lines rather than to produce one shot collectibles, thereby bringing more people in. Ya’ll been in business a long time and that savvy is growing on me.

Looks excellent! I'm excited by everything I see there and will obviously be 'all in' once it launches. Since you are looking for feedback at this stage, a few notes:

- The MH tiles are the materials I use most fully and regularly at the table, so it is great you are expanding them. Please be aware that I've noticed the larger ones are a little vulnerable to warping during storage. As you cook up your mix of new shapes and sizes you might want to consider this.

- Similarly, one 'soft spot' of the experience of working with the MH tiles is that they are a bit slippy and so your map can shift around during play. If you can think of a good surface that will keep this from happening (a really big textured rubber mat?) it might make a great add on.

- I'm sure it's occurred to you that folks will be interested in a set of fighter cards for the other humanoid races; I'm sure it would be welcome to customers

- When you put together monster cards, perhaps have an eye to individualizing some of them. E.g., a really big gooey troll rather than just a standard issue one, or a dragon or demon with some tricks up its sleeves. Or perhaps a set of special property cards for monsters analogous to your talent cards for heroes?

- One 'failure mode' we've seen in the production process of the LE set was some rules violations on fighter cards; this is obviously a place to be especially careful

- Both thumbs up on the new concept of the tessellating labyrinth map hexagonal tiles. Please consider the idea of a similar concept for exterior spaces (showing features of wilderness, village, city, etc.). Also, this is a great new 'design space' for materials that will complement this MH-scale hex mapping gear, such as little markers for noting features such as doors, traps, stairs, shafts, etc.,

- I don't see any marker chits for various monsters. There will be a lot of demand for this as people realize they don't have a way of representing horses, etc. in combat

Thanks for the feedback. As to new counters, those are scheduled for a later project.

As to fighters, monsters, and other cards, please note that all stretch goals have not yet been revealed. :)

* Megahexes - Do you have any photos of warped tiles? We would like to share pics with the factory and try to figure out what may have happened. I've personally not spotted any warp issues with the tiles, and it's important that if there is an issue that we deal with it right away.

Re: Decks of Destiny - Late April

I'll see if I can organize a picture of a warped tile. It won't knock your socks off because the 'z direction' deformation I've noticed is just a few mm. But that's enough to make them not lie flat and line up with a neighbor edge to edge. The situation where this happens is when a 3-hex or bigger tile is stored flat and on top of another tile that doesn't support its full length. It seems to be reversible (i.e., you can re-flatten it by storing at the bottom of a pile of heavy things). But, if you've got a warped one it's noticeable when you are working with the tiles at the table. I doubt it is avoidable given the size, thickness and materials, but it wouldn't happen if there were a way of storing them vertically instead of jumbled in a box.

Re: Decks of Destiny - Late April

I think the Decks of Destiny is really moving TFT in a unique and exciting direction.

Unfortunately, it's hard to make out any details with the picture resolution posted.

Two things though:

Option cards. There are 3 colours of card shown. If these relate to the 3 conditions of: Engaged, Disengaged and HTH, then this could be a clever way to make the option system clearer. In other words, you choose a colour of card appropriate to your condition, but can swap it for a card of the same colour at any time as long as you've not performed your action for that turn. I hope the intention is something along those lines. This would really be a boon when teaching new players, and I can see the need for several sets.

Adversaries. I think "Monster Cards" is a great idea, and 30 is a good start, but we need more. Lots more!

If I could see clearer copies of the other cards I could maybe comment further.

Still, looking good :)

Nailed it in one. Or three.

Will you add a HTH Concentrate or Disbelieve card or just keep Gargoyle Illusion as the sure-fire killer?

Maybe I am just dense, but having a reward level call "I want all the newness" and a stretch goal with the same name a little confusing, unless the name on the stretch goal is what the stretch goal effects. Am I right about only the "I want all the newness" level gets the dice? Just curious.

That reward level and the Everything level, which includes the $100 reward level.

My pet theory is that this is going to be bigger than the legacy edition kickstarter, as basically everyone who did that is a satisfied customer eager for more, and lots of folks just caught up with the product line when the LE reached distribution this spring and are trying to catch up.

Ya got me. My biggest Kickstarter pledge ever. My wife thinks I'm flat-out nuts. Hope I'm still married by January of 2020 :)

Thank you, Allen. You need to play a lot of TFT ASAP to show how much you get out of the game! :)
