Can Opener Grenade

So, I was wondering if the +5 was applied to the monsters as well as removing the armor, as everyone at the table was saying that it did. But the way I was reading the card made it sound like +5 to aide player OR Lose an armor.

(It only cost me the game if I was reading it correctly.)

The monster doesn't get +5.
