Many small units, not a metal hexagon?

When I see my battle map, I like to see my units all at once.
It rather disrupts the game when I see a number of featureless hexagons I have to remember.
In the real life game this might has been an issue but this is a computer game where we can shrink down unit models, or maybe stack them as they do in the CIV games.

You aren't the first to mention this. The hexagons are a sore point for just about everyone. Hopefully we will get some feedback/survey/something regarding preferences. Early examples of alpha video actually used the mini-minis approach; too bad they didn't stick with it. The featureless hexagons are just confusing. :-(

You can even keep the hexagons, just mark them somehow so we know what they are.

How about a flag showing the silhouette of the units within the hexagons? That wouldn't be too difficult to swing, right?
What I would really rather have is the ability to select individual units and issue them orders.
I would feel more in control that way.
To be honest, people play these games to feel like the commander - the big honcho cheese. Giving me less information about my forces makes me enjoy the game less, not more.

That would be interesting, but might detract from the "feel" a bit? I have a hard time believing flags would survive. ;-)

I was thinking about using a stack of ODE counters (or something similar).

I meant symbolic flag of sorts. Maybe one where we can select individual units from those in the hex?
