Question

The riding skill shows up in a few professions, as does the vow to own no more than a horse can carry.

Am I missing an explanation of what a horse can carry, or what benefits riding one can give, or where one can be bought?

This is an acknowledged oversight. The link below should help.

Re: Question

I'd add here that if you are calculating exactly what your mount can carry so you can push right up against it for that Vow, I'd usually rule you are violating it. Vows are self imposed virtues, not legal contracts, and certainly aren't legal contracts in the exact form of the few English words you could fit on a character sheet. The point of "own no more than (something) can carry isn't to stay within the carrying capacity of (something), or for that matter to not own it, just borrow it from your buddies who do. It's to avoid unnecessary luxuries and/or settled ties.

You shouldn't try to max out your carried gear, but conversely if your horse gets hit with a Steal ST spell and hence can't carry it all right now, you don't instantly have to throw some of it away either. And if it happens your are *stronger than a horse*, which isn't entirely out of the question for a setting like Dungeon Fantasy, well, it's probably OK for you to wear armor that would be too heavy for a horse to carry.

Re: Question

Vow: Own no more than my horse can carry
Obsession: Acquire the world’s strongest horse
Compulsive Behaviour: Collects saddlebags of holding.

This is DFRPG so doing so is exactly in the spirit of the game. I fully expect for Characters with this Vow to be hoarding easily portable wealth (IE taking their loot share out of found high value gems, jewelry, etc, instead of coins) in order to save up to buy expensive upgrades to all their equipment, to find every loop-hole (Bottomless Saddlebags, Bridle of Giant's Strength, etc), and generally to make sure they've nudged right up to the limit...

That's just the DFRPG way.
