Quasi-real Tained By a Master
Question: Taking the access to Chi/Cinematic Skills away from TBaM and still requiring Special Training for most things TBaM allows. Would this be a viable advantage for a semi-realistic game (between realistic an cinematic/not quite action movie)? If so, what would it cost 15, 20, 10?

Re: Quasi-real Tained By a Master
I lack the martial arts knowledge to judge whether such a trait would be realistic or not. However, for price, I can say that I wouldn't limit it much at all, compared to regular Trained by a Master. GURPS in general doesn't put much weight on "serves as a prerequisite" - since you have to pay points for the things it gives access to anyway, it's not that valuable on the base trait. And the other benefits of Trained By a Master (improved parries and Rapid Strikes, and various other halved penalties for cinematic techniques and various stunts) are all still worth a lot. I'd peg "Doesn't serve as a prerequisite for cinematic skills" as a -20% limitation on Trained By A Master.

Actually, I think that Trained By a Master without the ability to learn Cinematic Skills or Perks should be -30%.

I think that you need to forbid Cinematic Perks, Skills, and Techniques for a limitation at -30%.

Or Special Exercises perk at 1 point per cinematic advantage (or perk), or Unusual Training perk at 1 point per skill/technique. |

At the moment I can not think of any other subject that has caused more photons to die in vain than "the" Disad limit. There isn't even such a thing as a default one any more. |
Re: Quasi-real Tained By a Master
Or why I run games with a minimum character point value of 250 CP. I have met few people that are willing to take -125 CP of negative traits.

Re: Quasi-real Tained By a Master
Whoa, 2 pages in less than a day. Cool.
So, general consensus seems to be -30%. -10 seems to be better if this were an advantage of its own, which I think is the way I'll go. TBaM will just include it's benefits an if (BIG if) the game goes cinematic, allow an upgrade to TBaM. So, what to call it f a new advantage? Master's Disciple? Close Combat Expert? lol, I'm horrible with names. :-( Thanks for the help everyone |
Re: Quasi-real Tained By a Master
Unarmed Master is probably suitable. You could do the same thing with Weapon Master as well, the -30% enhancement, if you want to make people who are just very lethal with weapons.

Well, I think that most people would take one or the other instead of both. The only time I have seen that was a character who took WM (Bow), TBAM, and Heroic Archer.

Re: Quasi-real Tained By a Master
For thoughts by Christopher Rice on the subject:
http://www.ravensnpennies.com/gurps1...er-advantages/ He put it at a flat 5. No percentage, just a flat cost. To say we have concensus on a number is premature. And If we did, it would not be 30%. 20% seems to be the middle ground here. |
Re: Quasi-real Tained By a Master
Cool, thanks. Haven't seen this before. Very helpful. Looks like a lot of interesting articles.
However, given that the article puts it at -10 (not -5) for no cinematic skills an no off-limit access, 30% is just about right. 20 or 21 points for the new advantage. Either way, thanks for all the help everyone. |
