Winning as an elf

Can you win the game if you help someone during combat if you are an elf? Are you considered to be in combat if another player can't beat the monster, asks for your help, and then you beat the monster. You can only win the game if you're in combat or a card says that you can, but elves go up a level for assisting people in combat.

Yes. It's a level gained as a result of killing a monster.
