GURPS Dungeon Fantasy Monsters 3: Born of Myth & Magic

I die with a smile
'Twas an honor to engage
Such a renowned beast
— Sir Bannyk, last words
Without monsters, GURPS Dungeon Fantasy would just be a virtual Renaissance Faire. That's why we've already crafted multiple bestiaries of unique and disgusting foes to challenge your dungeon-delving murderhobos. But it's only today that things become legen- (wait for it), with GURPS Dungeon Fantasy Monsters 3: Born of Myth & Magic.

Face 16 terrifying creatures drawn from either classic mythology or twisted magic and mana! A single glance from a basilisk may be enough to kill you, while the cockatrice demands that you fight blind. You'll never know who to trust when a doppelganger can replace any NPC. Avoid the charms of a dryad and the swarms of the giant ant. A harpy brings both disease and terror, while the lava lizard just wants the world to burn. The living pit defies physics to open beneath your feet (see the preview for details). There's no predator fiercer than the manticore and no more famous source of statues than medusa. An octopus blossom just wants to nourish its roots with your corpse. The phase serpent makes a mockery of doors and walls as the phoenix defies death itself. The rock troll is a straightforward melee threat, while the rot worm is weak but comes at you in swarms. And you may never cast Body of Shadow again when you see the Shadow Warrior that it (rarely) spawns.

But wait, there's more! Through the magic of prefixes and variations, each monster can become a wide range of related baddies. Fight a Myrmecoleon (lion-headed Giant Ant), Siren (beautiful Harpy), Lamia (vermiform Medusa), Mage-Eater Blossom (mana damping Octopus Blossom), or Hydra Worm (multi-headed Rot Worm). Or add prefixes like Flying, Furious, Holy, Phase (p. 17), or Shadow (p. 21) to create a truly terrifying custom beast. Heck, even if you don't play GURPS Dungeon Fantasy, you can combine these with "Warping Monsters Into Mutants" (from Pyramid #3/90: After the End) for a bevy of mutated freaks!

If your game calls for fearsome monsters, regardless of the reason, let GURPS Dungeon Fantasy Monsters 3: Born of Myth & Magic put a classic spin on your next fight.

Living Pit is my new favorite GURPS monster.

I think a lot of us have been waiting for this PDF a long time and I'm sure the other write-ups are worth the wait.

This was an instant buy for me, haven't had a chance to give it a solid look yet today, but from a shallow flick through, the monsters look like a good variety and all have some decent customization notes, and a hardy amount of flavor text and advice. I'll probably write up a formal review sometime this weekend.

The customization notes make this supplement. Without combining variations, I count 46 monsters. And we even get a reference to Cugel's short-lived job.

Ooh yes, definitely grabbing this one. Lots of monsters I was hoping for, too!

Say, do the griffin and hippogriff have stats anywhere?

I think Banestorm has Griffin stats. EDIT: No, it has gryphons :D and hippogriffs (along with basilisks, caustiguses, demons, giant spiders, harpies, hellsharks, hydras, krakens, nightstalkers, wyverns...

This suplement has been an automatic purchase for me. I have been waiting for something similar for a long time. I would have loved a bigger book with more monsters but I want to thank the author for writting it.

I have yet to read in depth but it seems quite interesting. It contains not only description of the monsters but, also, its tactics and special rules (such as how to combat with a Medusa).

I love the "Monster traits" and prefixes section. I wish it had been bigger!

I think it has been a great purchase. Please keep producing more classical monsters!

I think most of the applicable prefixes ended up in Dungeon Fantasy Monsters 1! Make sure you combine the prefix list from both books. (And possibly include the few which ended up in Pyramid . . .)

I am still using my Beastiary/Fantasy Beastiary from 3rd Edition. The binding is breaking. I'd happily buy a 4th Edition Beastiary if you did nothing but compile all of the 3rd Edition "Three Books" into one and the various Monster Books, Fantasy/Banestorm, etc. No new content, just a republished single book. You could even update it every 2-3 years with more content and I'd rebuy it.
