For Coleptaran barbarians, how would you manage the Shirtless Savage lens? It seems a natural fit, but also seems odd to have DR 6 (Cant Wear Armor) and DR 5 (doesnt stack with armor). Convert all of one to the other? Which one?

I'd convert everything to Can't Wear Armor, since Doesn't Stack is kinda redundant if you can't wear armor in the first place due to body shape, and Tough Skin no longer applies. Though this does mean they less DR from the template.

Clearly these are especially tough and savage beetle people!

Edit: Forgot about Tough Skin.

Tough skin can still apply, just put the Tough Skin DR under the carapace. Attacks that only need to touch need to penetrate your carapace, but dont need to penetrate your tough skin DR.

Would GMs even allow Shirtless Savage to the bugs? It allows some pretty serious DR for no weight. I think DR 6 + DR 7 (Tough Skin) + DR 2 (Crushing Only, Tough Skin) for a total of DR 13/15. Basic set armor has a hard time matching that at all...

Coleopteran's start with DR 5 (Can't wear armor) [15], Shirtless savage adds 4 character points of DR, but CWA DR costs 3 pts per DR, so that's 1 left over. In addition it adds the option for for another 6 to 10 character points in DR, or an extra 1-3 DR(CWA).

So a Shirtless Savage Coleopteran would be DR 6 to DR 9. Well armored but hardly invincible.

This assumes you go the CP equivalence route, which I tend to favor. If you got the alternate route and let them just invest more CP in these options it becomes a range of DR 7 to DR 12. If I had a player who really wanted to do this I'd suggest starting at the minimum and buying their way up in play.

Y'all have far too little imagination.

Just looking at what you can do with a Rage Barbarian, the Colleopteran can have DR 6 + DR 7 (Tough Skin) + Rage Casting (Armour) for DR 5 + Skinchanging (Bear) for DR 3 + Naked Rage for half damage after DR + Mountains of Meat for 52 HP (Max Colleopteran HP = 26) + Beefcake Protection for +3 DB (assuming a naked, female Colleopteran). That's a total of DR 21, effective HP 104 (thanks to half damage), and DB +3.

Make it an Earth-Infused Colleopteran with Call of the Soil 3 and you're looking at DR 25.

Multi-class to Martial Artist for an additional DR 2 (Chi). Current total = DR 27.

Multi-class to Sorcerer from the recent Pyramid article and you can nab Dragon-Touched giving access to 4 more DR (Tough Skin). Current total = DR 31.

Go Mystic Knight and you can use Defensive Imbuements to potentially quadruple that every turn, DX up to 20 and Eldritch Talent 6 means the -10 only puts you at effective skill 16, then buy off the FP cost using the appropriate power-up. Current total = DR 124.

Is there any reason not to All-Out Attack at this point?

NOTE: This is an insanely high level build, requiring enormous point investiture, I'm just pointing out what can be done.

Just to be clear, I wasn't suggesting my way was the right or superior way, merely that I tend to be a ways away from the mainstream of this niche-within-a-niche. I'm quite used to that.

Last time I played a character that was identifiably a barbarian (but not a Barbarian), which would have been about 10 years ago, I served as a spy for the paterfamilias of a prominent family. Being a slave meant I could go practically anywhere without being noticed, and I could get all kinds of information because no one thinks it necessary to hide documents from the German (He can't read. He wears pants for gods' sake!). That's the kind of game I like.

If you're going to All-Out Attack anyway, why bother with Beefcake Protection?

It's 1 point, why wouldn't you?

You don't have to All-Out, even a Rage Barbarian with Berserk usually won't be berserking all the time, so you might as well have +3 to defences when you're not, just in case you have to face something really scary.
