Does Defeating 2 Monsters Mean 2 Levels?

My game group and I absolutely love this game, but only have 1 point of contention.

If you are fighting 2 or more monsters, for any reason, do you get 1 or 2 level(s) for every monster you defeat? Or is it just 1 since you won "one" combat?

you get 1 level per monster you kill, unless the monster says "2 levels", in which case you get 2.

To point out the rule which confirms this, under Rewards:

If you're in a combat with 2 Monsters and your combat strength is greater than the combat strength of both Monsters, then you've killed two Monsters, and for each Monster you get the rewards as described in that section.
