Northrop Grumman RQ-4 Global Hawk

Hi guys

I am trying to stat a Northrop Grumman RQ-4 Global Hawk drone and have come up with the following:

TL: 8
Vehicle: RQ-4 Global Hawk
ST/HP: 99
Hnd/SR: +2/3
HT: 11f
Move: 3/179
LWt.: 16.125
Load: 1.5
SM: +5
Occ: 0
DR: 6
Range: 14'154
Cost: $222M
Loc.: Wi3Wr
Stall: 55
Notes:

I took most of the information from Wikipedia and the USAF:

-> http://www.af.mil/AboutUs/FactSheets...obal-hawk.aspx
-> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northro...ns_.28RQ-4B.29

But as you can see, I still have a lot of question marks in my stats. These I would like you to help me fill.

Thanks!

Cheers

Onkl

  • ST/HP is 99 (empty weight in pounds is 14, 950).
  • I'd give it a +2/3 for Handling/Stability (that's pure gut and looking at other similiar vehicles)
  • SM is right (it's wingspan is 130.9 ft)
  • Acceleration is a bit tricky. If we reverse engineer the number of Gs it might have as a spaceship (GURPS Spaceships, p. 35), we get around a 1 acceleration. That's probably what I'd use.
  • I'd call DR a 6 (gut again)
  • Stall is 55 (from here)

Oh no. 1G is "fighter jet with the afterburners going" and this thing is more in the ballpark of a commercial jet in thrust to weight.

I look at the "business jet" on p.465 of Campaigns and it's Acc 4. Even that might be a little high. Stall sped is probably better than the 55 listed for the business jet though. The Global Hawk has long straight wings.

I'm not using G's, I'm using the formula from Spaceships on the page I listed. That said, I might go with an Acceleration of 4, that probably makes the most sense. Stall speed is garnered from the actual stats for the drone itself...

Yeah, for the most part that looks pretty good however for acceleration it's a simple matter of looking up it's engines thrust and divide that by it's weight.

From a quick search it's engine is a Rolls-Royce F137-RR-100 with 7,600 lbf of thrust. Fully loaded a globalhawk weighs in at about 32,000lbs giving us a Basic move of around 3.

Also for DR, I'd say that 6 could work if we go by the fact for some odd reason GURPS tends to give normal cars a super high base DR of around 5 or so but realistically I doubt it would even really rate having DR2 having maybe 2 to 3mm of composite paneling for "armor" on average.

Damn, I didn't know that. Thanks. I think I'm going to talk to my best friend (he's worn out several copies of GURPS Vehicles) and do a blog post on converting aircraft to "basic" GURPS stats.

Heh, no problem though in your second post you did get pretty close and would be about right if we assume a lower load.

I'm also looking very forward to seeing that post. Here's a doc that can help a bit, scroll down to pg. 116. It's for Transhuman Space but it uses a more updated version of Vehicles rules for figuring an aircraft's stats.

Well, I was agreeing with Fred actually. But yeah, thanks for this. I appreciate it.
