The card says to use immediately the one-shot items I get from each player. This means to put them in play/equip them or get their bonus/special ability at once and discard them?

With respect to a one-shot Item, "use" has one inarguable meaning, and that's to get its effect and then discard it when that effect comes to an end. One-shot Items in play are not "equipped" or "used," simply "carried." So, you take all the cards you take from the other players, and then you use those one-shot Items to get their effects. You don't get to keep anything you took.
