Discarding Hireling

If I have a Hireling in play and I draw a second Hireling card, in order to use it I have to discard the first Hireling?(Do I lose the item it carries?)
If the Hireling has a golden piece value can I turn him sideways?
Moreover,if I want to sacrifice a Hireling to escape from a battle does it have to be in play or can I throw it from my hand?
Thanks a lot in advance!!

Yes, you must discard the first Hireling. If you are not being *forced* to discard a Hireling, you can remove the Item it is carrying before you discard it.

There are no Hirelings with a Gold Piece value. However, if there were, you still could not turn it sideways because the rules say explicitly you may only have one Hireling in play.

It must be in play. A Hireling in your hand gives you no benefits.
