Munchkin AT: The Lich and low level players.

"The Lich." Level 1 player Kicks open the Door to find "The Lich." the Lich doesnt pursue players Level 5 or below. Does this mean the fight doesnt even happen? Or does it mean the player can choose to fight or run away and if they run away it will auto-succeed? People I played with wanted to say fight didnt occur so its like they kicked open the door and didnt find a monster so they wanted to let player look for trouble or loot the room, I thought this was incorrect. If card was pulled by a Level 6 player who decided to Run Away, would only players level 6 and up need to Run Away or lose a level?

The fight happens. "Does not pursue" doesn't mean "will not fight." You can try to fight, even kill it, but if you can't win, and have to Run Away and you're the level the Monster won't pursue or lower, then the Run Away attempt is automatically successful. The rest of the players are also immune based on their Level.

Does this also apply when looking for trouble? Could someone, say with a low level but high combat score from gear or one shots, LFT on a high level that will not pursue them based on level, and if the fight goes against them, just back out with an automatic retreat?

Yep. That works just fine.

Thank you so much! I tried this vs Wendigo, but my group disagreed and everyone thought I should roll to escape.

Good to know!

Nothing in the rules say that Running Away is different just because you looked for trouble rather than finding a Monster by kicking down the door.

I'm going to make that a definite statement: Running Away from a monster works exactly the same regardless of how the monster entered combat. If a monster wouldn't pursue you if you had Kicked Open The Door, it won't pursue you when you Look For Trouble.

Re: Munchkin AT: The Lich and low level players.

Thanks for the clarification.

The main debate in my group wasn't necessarily how the monster entered combat as much as items being used in the combat, which was seen as "committing" to or cementing the fight. So to be clear and precise, even if you attempted to beat the monster, possibly by having used a one shot, was stopped with another, etc etc (long story short, items were used), you can still have a free get away?

I thought so, or else I wouldn't have looked for trouble. To read the card and follow its instructions would mean the run away attempt was automatic. I felt that to add the conditional about items being used is reading too much into it or adding rules/text to the card that aren't there (which seems to be a common flaw in many Munchkin situations).

Discussions about rulings are more appropriate for the main Munchkin forum, not 101.
