Loot the Room Guideline

We have played Munchkin quite a bit but one thing we are curious about is the Loot the Room option. The way we play it now is if you defeat a monster, whether it was from kicking open the door or looking for trouble, or you do not fight anyone at all, you get to loot the room. Reading over the instructions it only mentions looting the room when you do not fight a monster. We were just wondering what the basic rule was for looting the room. Help, please!

It is as the rules say: If you did not find a Monster when you kicked down the door, and you didn't look for trouble, then, and only then, you can loot the room.
